Alford's Record-Setting Night Paces OU to Win

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team opened the UALR Tournament with a 3-1 win over Little Rock at the Jack Stephens Center on Thursday night. The Sooners improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Trojans remain winless at 0-4.
Oklahoma rolled through the first two sets with victories of 25-18 and 25-14. The third set went back and forth between the two sides before Little Rock came out on top, 30-28. The Sooners twice staved off set-point and even had three chances at match-point before dropping their first set of the season. OU had won each of its first 11 sets to start the season; marking the second-longest stretch in program history. The school record is 12 consecutive sets won to begin a season; established in 1988. OU claimed the final set, 25-17.
The Sooners, who are 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 2013, were paced by sophomore setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.). She set a program record for assists in a four-set match during the 25-point, rally-scoring era with 58. The record was previously held by Julia Doyle with 53 against Kansas State in 2013.
Three Oklahoma hitters totaled 15 kills or more with redshirt-senior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) leading all players with 19 kills on a .400 attack rate. Senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) and senior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) each tallied 15 kills. Gardiner hit .414 with 13 digs for her second double-double of the year and Spann hit a match-leading .609 with five blocks. For the match, the Sooners outhit the Trojans, .356 to .104.
Little Rock was led by Veronica Marin with 13 kills followed by Marina Avram with nine. Taylor Lindberg dished out 22 assists and Aubrey Wilson added 11. Sydnee Martin led all players with 18 kills.
For Oklahoma, redshirt-sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) picked 12 digs, which was the second most behind Gardiner. Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) chipped in with 10 digs, nine kills and three blocks.
The Sooners are back in action on Friday evening against UT-Martin at 4 p.m.
