LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over UT Martin in the UALR Tournament at the Jack Stephens Center on Friday evening. The Sooners are 5-0 to begin a season for the first time since 2009, while the Skyhawks dropped to 1-4.
Oklahoma cruised through the first two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-12; hitting .545 and .567 respectively. UT Martin forced a fourth set with a narrow, 25-23, win in the third. The Sooners then pulled away in the fourth, 25-16, to claim the match.
Sophomore outside hitter Madison Drescher (Southlake, Texas) set a career-high with 14 kills on a .440 attack rate to lead the Oklahoma offense. Senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) recorded her third double-double of the season in a 13-kill, 10-dig effort.
Sophomore setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.), who set the program record for assists in a four-set match in the 25-point, rally-scoring era last night, posted the second highest such total with 56. The Sooner offense collectively hit .441 for the match. Senior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) hit a match-leading .818 with on nine kills, while redshirt-sophomore middle blocker Leslie Atherton (Tulsa, Okla.) hit .750 on nine kills
Madison Wessling and Macy Reigelsperger tallied 11 kills apiece for UT Martin as the Skyhawks hit .148 for the match. Setter Kelly Lean dished out 35 assists.
Redshirt-sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led all players with 11 digs followed by Gardiner and junior defensive specialist Emma Kelly (Houston, Texas), who picked up nine. Sophomore outside hitter Cathryn Cheek (Coppell, Texas) made her first career start and added seven kills and four digs.
The Sooners are in action twice on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. against Mississippi State, where Gardiner was an AVCA All-American as a freshman in 2013. The action wraps up in the afternoon at 3 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
