Bedlam returns to Norman in 2016, and if this year's installment of the in-state rivalry is anything like the last four meetings, fans could be in for the game of the year.
In 2015, Oklahoma traveled to Stillwater and turned in one of its best performances of the year, topping the Cowboys 58-23 to claim the Big 12 Championship. The Sooners racked up 344 yards on the ground and scored five rushing touchdowns, two of which came from more than 60 yards out.
Before last season Bedlam had seen three straight contests decided in the final seconds and twice the game had gone to overtime. In 2014 OSU tied the game at 35-35 with a punt return touchdown with less than a minute remaining in regulation, and then won it in overtime with a short field goal. Oklahoma fullback Aaron Ripkowski scored three touchdowns in the loss.
Oklahoma turned in the last minute heroics in 2013. Trailing the sixth-ranked Cowboys 24-20 with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter, Blake Bell and the Sooners began a drive from their own 34-yard line. Bell, Oklahoma's third signal caller of the game, matriculated the ball downfield and with 24 seconds remaining, tossed a corner route to Jalen Saunders to score the game-winning touchdown. Oklahoma won the game 33-24 and went on to beat Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The Sooners played from behind for much of the game in 2012 with both teams trading scores in what became a high-scoring affair. Saunders turned in a memorable punt return touchdown and quarterback Landry Jones set school records for completions (46) and attempts (71) in passing for 500 yards and three touchdowns. With Oklahoma trailing by a touchdown with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Bell plowed into the endzone out of the “Belldozer” formation to tie the game at 45-45. In overtime, the Sooners held OSU to a field goal and then on their second offensive play, Brennan Clay dashed 18 yards to the end zone to give OU a 51-48 win.
Close games are not just a recent trend in Bedlam. The 2010 matchup saw another back-and-forth game and twice OU possessed the ball and a two-point lead with less than four minutes to play in the game. Both times Jones delivered touchdown passes of more than 75 yards to preserve the lead. Oklahoma won the game 47-41 and then went on to win the Big 12 Championship over Nebraska and the Fiesta Bowl over Connecticut.
In 2004 Oklahoma took an unbeaten record and the No. 2 ranking to Stillwater and came away with another nail-biter. Then-freshman Adrian Peterson plowed through the Cowboy defense for 249 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown gallop, but the Sooners led by just three points with 15 seconds to play in the fourth. Oklahoma State attempted a 49-yard field goal but the kick sailed wide left and OU won 38-35. The Sooners went on to win the Big 12 Championship over Colorado and played for the BCS National Championship.
The Cowboys went 10-3 in 2015 and ended their season with a 48-20 loss to Ole Miss in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. OSU returns the bulk of its 2015 starts, getting 10 back on offense and seven on the defensive side of the ball. Head coach Mike Gundy enters his 12th year looking to deliver Oklahoma State's second Big 12 Championship.
On offense, the Cowboys return nearly all of their production from a year ago. Junior signal caller Mason Rudolph ranked second in the Big 12 and 17th nationally last season with 3,770 yards through the air. James Washington could be the league's top returning pass catcher. He hauled in 53 balls for 1,087 yards and 10 scores last season and is a playmaking threat with the ability to stretch the field vertically and high point the ball in traffic. Oklahoma State will have to improve on the offensive line if it wants to go far in 2016. OSU ranked 113th nationally in rushing yards per game (126.8) and 90th in sacks allowed per game at nearly two and a half per contest.
The Cowboys return seven starters on the defensive side of the ball, but lose their best player in defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah to the NFL Draft. OSU ranked 88th nationally last season in scoring offense, giving up just more than 30 points per game, and 99th in total defense (439.1 yards per game). OSU will be strong in the interior as it returns All-Big 12 selections Jordan Burton and Chad Whitener at linebacker, and its biggest question marks will likely come at corner and along the defensive line.?
