NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team lost to Baylor, 6-1, in front of 1,633 at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Saturday evening to even the series at a game apiece. The Sooners are now 16-15-1 overall and 3-5 in the Big 12, while the Bears improved to 16-15 and 4-4.
“I thought they beat us in every phase tonight,” claimed head coach Pete Hughes. “Starting pitching. Offensively they did a good job. They left my guys on and scored six runs, so we didn't get any big hits. Credit Baylor.”
Baylor got a run in the second and two more in the third to chase OU freshman right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.). First baseman Aaron Dodson got the scoring started with a solo home run to lead off the second. In the third, the Bears strung together four-consecutive singles, including RBI knocks from left fielder Kameron Esthay and right fielder Darryn Sheppard.
The Sooners got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) led off the inning with a triple banged off the wall in straight away center. He scored on a base hit up the middle by junior second baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.). Flansburg went to second on the on an error to get to scoring position with nobody out, but failed to advance.
In the eighth, the Bears extended their lead with an unearned run pushed across on a RBI-single from Darryn Sheppard. Oklahoma would load the bases in the bottom half on three walks, but were unable to bring anyone in.
Baylor would put the game out of reach in the ninth as third baseman Steven McLean went deep with a towering home run to left with a runner aboard that pushed the lead to 6-1.
Madden (1-2) pitched 2.2 innings in his second start of the season. He allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out a pair. Right-hander Drew Tolson (4-1), who pitched a complete-game vs. OU in 2015, surrendered just one run as he scattered six hits and three walks. He added five strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Right-hander Troy Montemayor (7) got the save in 1.1 inning of relief.
“[Tolson] two-hit us last year and threw a complete-game,” recalled Hughes. “We knew we had to be disciplined at keeping the ball out of their air. I think we had 14 or 15 fly ball outs and you can't do that. You get more opportunities for success when the ball is on the ground or line drives and we have to do a better job at that tomorrow.”
Senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) went 2-for-3 to lead the Sooner offense. Six players posted two-hit games for the Bears, including center fielder Richard Cunningham, who scored three times.
The rubber-match is set for a 1:00 pm first pitch on Sunday afternoon. Junior right-hander Jake Elliott (Coppell, Texas) goes to the mound for Oklahoma against right-hander Kyle Hill.
