NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team won in walk-off fashion for the third time in its last six home games. The Sooners opened the weekend with a come-from-behind, 4-3, win over Baylor in front of 1,370 at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Friday night. Oklahoma improved to 16-14-1 overall and 3-4 in the Big 12, while the Bears dropped to 15-15 and 3-4.
Junior Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) led off the bottom of the ninth with a line drive single to left. A walk to junior third baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) put two on with nobody out. Junior Renae Martinez (San Pedro, Calif.) was called on to sacrifice in a pinch-hit situation. He got down a bunt in front of the mound to advance the runners and Neuse rounded third to score the game-winning run as the throw to first was down the line.
“It's what I feel in the dugout, too,” head coach Pete Hughes stated about the team playing with confidence. “That's young kids growing up a little bit. It takes them about 20 games to get settled in to this level of baseball. You want to see kids execute and play fast and play to win and I think we've seen that.”
Oklahoma found itself playing from behind immediately as Baylor third baseman Steven McLean started the game with a single and scored from second on a dropped fly ball in center field with two down. The Bears got two more runs in the fourth on a two-out rally. Catcher Aaron Dodson singled to center and scored on a two-run home run a foot over the wall in left by designated hitter Matt Menard.
Senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) brought the Sooners to within a run in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to right. Junior first baseman Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) started the inning with a base hit up the middle to get on for Haley, who went deep with two outs.
Trailing by a run, freshman designated hitter Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) led off the bottom of the eighth with a double that dropped between the BU right fielder and second baseman. A sacrifice-bunt and an error put runners at the corners with nobody out. Senior right fielder Alex Wise (Neosho, Mo.) tied the game with a sacrifice-fly to center field.
In the ninth, Dodson hit a leadoff single to left and got into scoring position on a sacrifice-bunt. Neuse then moved from shortstop to the mound and after walking one for the next two to keep the game tied. Neuse (2-1), who earned the win picked up a strikeout and got a deep fly ball to center to end the threat.
“We've got a lot of faith in our bullpen. We go to JB [Olson] to Keaton to Sheldon that's what we try to do and then we mix and match some of it with Kenny Saenz coming in and they're dependable with good stuff. I thought JB had a good outing. One of his better ones, so it's good to get him going.”
Freshman right-hander Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas) went six innings in the start. He scattered five hits and struck out three as he gave up three runs, two earned, without issuing a walk. Lefty Daniel Castano lasted seven innings in the start for Baylor. He allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts. Righty Joe Heineman (2-2) took the loss in one-plus inning of relief. He surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks.
For the game, Oklahoma outhit Baylor, 9-7, but managed to leave 11 runners on base. Neuse went 2-for-5 and O'Brien went 2-for-4.
The Sooners and Bears take the field for game two on Saturday evening at 5:00 pm. Fans attending the OU football spring game can show their ticket for $4 admission at the baseball game. Freshman right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) gets the ball against right-hander Drew Tolson.
