NORMAN – No. 13/14 Oklahoma (25-7, 2-1 Big 12) saw its winning streak over Kansas (20-12, 1-1) in Norman end at 24 games Saturday with a 5-2 loss at Marita Hynes Field.
Previously, OU had not lost to Kansas at home since a 3-2 setback on April 16, 1995. The five runs were also the most OU had allowed to KU in any game since a 13-5 Oklahoma win on April 6, 2011.
Also working against Oklahoma was a season-high 12 runners left on base. The Sooners stranded at least one runner in every inning, including two runners in five separate innings.
Trailing 5-0 entering the seventh, OU was able to mount a small rally and actually brought the tying run to the plate.
Shay Knighten and Caleigh Clifton each singled with one out in the seventh and moved into scoring position on a groundout. An error on KU third baseman Taylor Dodson allowed Knighten to score, while Fale Aviu's RBI single made it 5-2 as Clifton scored.
Sophomore Nicole Pendley batted next and represented the tying run, but she grounded back to the pitcher on a 3-2 pitch for the final out as OU's seven-game winning streak ended.
Pendley was 2-4 on the day to extend her season-best hitting streak to six games. Knighten also had a multi-hit game as she was 2-4 with a run scored.
Kansas opened the scoring in the third inning to lead 2-0.
OU starter Kelsey Stevens had struck out four in a row, but she hit both Harli Ridling and Taylor Dodson to start the third inning. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position before leadoff hitter Chaley Brickey was intentionally walked to fill the bases. Shannon McGinley then hit a sinking line drive into left field that got under the glove of senior Kady Self, enabling two runners to score.
The Kansas lead grew to 5-0 after a three-run fourth inning.
With one out and two on, freshman Jayden Chestnut came on in relief of Stevens. She immediately got a flyout but threw an illegal pitch to move both runners into scoring position before walking Brickey to fill the bases. A second illegal pitch was called on Chestnut to force in a run, while KU tacked on two more on McGinley's second two-run double in as many innings.
Stevens took the loss for Oklahoma, falling to 7-4 on the season. She retired the first six batters she faced before faltering in the third and being removed in the fourth. Stevens gave up four runs on two hits, two walks and three hit batters on the day with five strikeouts.
Oklahoma will look for the series win Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Fox Sports Oklahoma Plus.
