STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 7 Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 4 Oklahoma State, 26-11, on Friday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
Three Sooners registered wins in the contest at 125 pounds, 133 pounds and 174 pounds. All three victories came over ranked opponents, including two over higher-ranked foes.
At 125 pounds, No. 10 Ryan Millhof downed No. 5 Eddie Klimara by 5-3 decision, marking his fifth win over a ranked opponent in his last six outings. Klimara recorded a first-period takedown and led 2-1 after the opening frame. Millhof escaped to begin the third but Klimara earned a penalty point to make the score 3-2 before Millhof tallied a late takedown and the riding-time point for the win. Millhof's victory avenged a 5-3 loss to Klimara in the first Bedlam series of the season on Dec. 13 in Norman.
No. 4 Cody Brewer kept the momentum going for the Sooners with a 20-3 technical fall in 3:55 over No. 18 Gary Wayne Harding in the 133-pound bout. Brewer led 14-2 after the first period and registered a takedown and a 4-point nearfall in the second to put the OU up 8-0 after two matches.
“When Millhof and Brewer won, I thought to myself, 'Okay, we're rolling now,'” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “Unfortunately, we fell short in other weights. It's just nice to start off with a couple wins like that, and you can see what the momentum does, and it definitely helps out.”
In the 174-pound bout, Matt Reed secured a 3-2 decision over No. 5 Kyle Crutchmer. The match remained scoreless after the opening frame, but Crutchmer recorded an escape in the second to lead 1-0. The Cowboy gained a penalty point in the final period, but Reed escaped twice and used a penalty from a Crutchmer technical foul for the victory.
“We told him, we said, 'Matt, it's finally time to beat this kid. We think that you're capable of doing it.' He stuck to the game plan this time and didn't get out of position,” Cody explained. “The only time he ever got beat by him was when he stood too high or reached too much or got himself out of position. He took good position the whole time tonight, and I think that was the difference in the match. He stuck to the strategy.”
At 141 pounds, No. 1 Dean Heil downed Noah Teaney by 16-1 technical fall and Davion Jeffries dropped a 16-6 major decision to No. 13 Anthony Collica at 149 pounds. No. 6 Joe Smith defeated Shayne Tucker by 11-4 decision in the 157-pound bout. No. 12 Clark Glass dropped a 16-3 major decision to top-ranked Alex Dieringer at 165 pounds and No. 16 Nolan Boyd defeated Andrew Dixon, 15-2, in the 184-pound match.
The Cowboys took the final two matches of the night by riding-time point, as Brad Johnson dropped a 4-3 decision to Preston Weigel and No. 5 Austin Marsden downed No. 16 Ross Larson, 2-1.
The Sooners fell to 9-4 on the season and 4-2 in Big 12 competition. OU returns to the mat on Thursday, Feb. 11, for a 9 p.m. CT dual with Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., before returning home for its final contest of the regular season with South Dakota State on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.
