Sooners Fall in First Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fifth-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 10 Wake Forest in the first round of play at the 2016 ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship on Friday at the Boar's Head Sport Club in Charlottesville, Va.

"We fought hard tonight," head coach John Roddick said. "We have to execute better, but we are on the right track. Wake played a very good match tonight and they deserved to win."

After drawing the No. 8 seed for the tournament, the Sooners (3-3) faced off with the ninth-seeded Demon Deacons for the second time in as many weeks.

Wake Forest jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a pair of wins in doubles. Oklahoma's top pair of juniors Andrew Harris and Alex Ghilea fell to Wake's No. 1 duo of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim, 6-1 on court one. The Demon Deacons clinched the opening point when Jon Ho and Petros Chrysochos topped the OU team of senior Axel Alvarez and sophomore Spencer Papa 6-3 at number two doubles.

OU was unable to arrest that moment in singles, with the Demon Deacons winning first sets on four courts. Playing at number six singles, freshman Andrew Biro was the first match finished, falling to Seraphim in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Papa was the next Sooner to fall. He dropped his match with Chrysochos 6-4, 6-3 at number two singles, putting Wake Forest up 3-0 and just one point away from the win.

Ghilea gave Oklahoma its lone win of the dual with a straight-sets victory over Ho at number three singles. Ghilea took the first set in a breaker and then won a break late in the second set to win 7-5.

On court four junior Florin Bragusi split the first two sets of his match against Romain Bogaerts, but dropped the third set 6-3 to give Wake Forest the clinching fourth point and the dual.

The Sooners will be back in action on Saturday as they take on 16th-ranked San Diego in the consolation draw.
