MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In a top-25 showdown, the No. 23 Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 4 West Virginia on Sunday afternoon inside Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The loss snapped an eight-match winning streak for the Sooners, the second longest in school history. OU now sits at 10-3-1 overall on the season with a 3-1-0 mark in Big 12 play, tying the 2002 season for the second-best start through four conference games behind a 3-0-1 record in 2005.
The OU defense held strong for most of the match, keeping West Virginia (10-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 Big 12) off the board until the 78th minute. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade finished with six saves in the match.
"We come away with many positives," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. "For 77 minutes we did the things necessary to compete and play with a top program and talented team in West Virginia. We created positive moments of possession and created opportunities lacking that final touch of quality to finish it off.
"The team is disappointed with the result and that speaks to how far we have come and how much more we have to look forward to this season," Potter continued. "It will be nice to be home from a long road trip!"
The Mountaineers now hold a 32-match unbeaten streak against conference competition dating back to 2009. This season, the Sooners are 1-2-1 against ranked opponents.
The contest's first score came off a header from sophomore forward/defender Hannah Abraham in the 78th minute. A Michaela Abam corner kick went to junior midfielder Alli Magaletta, who then sent it to Abraham. The Mountaineers stretched their lead to 2-0 off a goal from Abam, assisted by Carla Portillo and Heather Kaleiohi, in the 86th minute.
For much of the contest, play went back and forth, especially in the first half where both teams generated scoring opportunities. The Sooners and Mountaineers entered the locker room with five shots apiece, but WVU went on to outshoot OU, 17-9, including by an 8-2 mark in shots on goal.
Senior midfielder Shiloh Price led the Sooners with three shots, including perhaps their best look at the goal early in the match that forced WVU's freshman goalkeeper Rylee Foster to fall on the ball to prevent the goal. Senior midfielder/forward Madison Saliba and senior forward Liz Keester finished with a pair of shots apiece, while senior midfielder Jemma Cota and junior midfielder Tori Bowman both added one.
The Sooners return home next weekend to host Baylor in their "Kick for a Cure" match at 7 p.m. CT on Friday. The game will stream through SoonerSports.tv.
