BATON ROUGE, La.  In its season opener, the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team was edged by No. 5 LSU, 196.950-196.725, Saturday night in front of 8,228 fans inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

"Our team competed aggressively, which is what we asked of them," OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "We made mistakes. We will learn from them and get better."

The meet was close throughout, with LSU leading after the first rotation then the Sooners holding the advantage after the next two. The Tigers used a floor score of 49.475, the largest of the night on any rotation, to secure the win.

The Sooners started on bars, posting a 49.100. In the No. 5 spot, junior McKenzie Wofford registered a 9.95, OU's highest score of the meet. On vault, senior Keeley Kmieciak set the team high with a 9.875.

OU turned in its best score of the night on floor with a 49.250, led by a 9.925 from senior Haley Scaman and a 9.9 from sophomore AJ Jackson. Closing the meet on beam, freshman Nicole Lehrmann and sophomore Natalie Brown scored team-best 9.875s. The score was a career high for Brown.

Kmieciak and junior Chayse Capps both competed as all-arounders, recording scores of 39.250 and 39.150, respectively. It was the first time since her freshman season that Kmieciak participated on all four events and the first time for Capps in her career.

The Sooners will be back in action next weekend when they welcome California and TWU to the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday, Jan. 15. The meet is set for a 6:45 p.m. CT start.
