NORMAN – For the first time since March 6, 1990, Oklahoma men's basketball is ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, it was announced Monday afternoon. OU received all 65 first-place votes from the national media panel (first unanimous selection this season).
The Sooners (15-1, 4-1 Big 12) are also ranked first by the USA Today Coaches Poll as well as No. 1 in the RPI.
“It's great,” OU head coach Lon Kruger said, “It's not something our guys focus on necessarily every day or think about or even have a lot of conversation about, but they're fans… we all are, and it's great. But, it's all about getting better tomorrow. The leadership of this group, the senior group, know that what it is today is okay, but it's nothing compared to what we have to keep doing in Big 12 play in terms of getting better and to keep challenging the opposition that lies ahead. Our guys think it's great, but they understand that it's not the most important thing.”
OU is the fifth school to be ranked AP No. 1 this season, joining North Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan State and Kansas.
Joining OU in the AP Top 25 are fellow Big 12 members Kansas (No. 3), West Virginia (No. 6), Baylor (No. 13) and Iowa State (19).
No. 1 Oklahoma plays at No. 19 Iowa State tonight in Ames on 'Big Monday' at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN. The Sooners then travel to Waco to play No. 13 Baylor on Saturday.
