NORMAN — Competing in front of its home crowd for the first time this season, the No. 4 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team tallied a 197.125 to rise past No. 11 California (194.225) and Texas Woman's University (188.250) and secure a pair of wins inside Lloyd Noble Center Friday night.
The Sooners took top honors on all four events and in the all-around, in which senior Keeley Kmieciak posted a 39.425 mark. Junior Chayse Capps also competed in the all-around, finishing with a score of 39.200.
Senior Haley Scaman and sophomore AJ Jackson tied on vault with identical scores of 9.9, while juniors Capps and McKenzie Wofford shared the bars title with 9.925s. Junior Kara Lovan matched a career high of 9.925 to secure the beam title, and Jackson claimed the floor crown with a 9.925.
OU scored higher on three of four events on Friday night than in last weekend's season-opening meet, also increasing its team score of 196.725. In total, OU finished with 16 scores of 9.85 or higher in Friday's meet.
“I think that we maybe didn't perform our best last meet, and we definitely fixed a lot of mistakes this week,” Kmieciak said. “But we also have a lot of things we can fix. I just think that, like she [Jackson] said, having a home crowd, it's a whole new energy and it's so much more fun competing for people that are all there for you.”
The Sooners stormed out to the lead after their vault rotation and never looked back. OU posted a 49.325 on vault to hold a 1.450 lead over Cal and a 2.725 advantage over TWU through one rotation. OU tallied five scores of 9.825 or higher, paced by back-to-back 9.9s from Scaman, who performed her Yurchenko 1.5 for the first time this season, and sophomore Jackson to close out the event. In the No. 2 spot, freshman Alex Marks, who joined the Sooners this semester, made her collegiate debut, scoring a 9.775.
“I think we started off with really good energy, and vault was very dynamic still, obviously, after working on our landings. This is only the second meet of the year and we're working out some adrenaline. When you start out on vault, you've got a lot of juice, so you have to learn how to control that,” OU head coach K.J. Kindler said.
OU's highest score of the night came on bars behind several stuck dismounts. In just the second bars routine of her career, junior Capps soared to a 9.925. She tied for the meet lead on the event with fellow junior Wofford. Freshman Nicole Lehrmann shined in her Lloyd Noble Center debut, scoring a 9.9 in the No. 2 spot on bars and adding a 9.875 on beam, matching her mark from last weekend.
“On bars, I thought our landings were exceptional,” Kindler said. “We still can be more precise on the bar, but we stuck a lot of dismounts. [There was] good energy, I thought.”
Behind Lovan's career-high-matching 9.925, the Sooners added a 49.400 on beam. Kmieciak, Lehrmann and Capps all tallied identical scores of 9.875, while junior Charity Jones scored a 9.85.
In the final rotation, Kmieciak posted a 9.825 to lead off on floor. The Sooners then had a few uncharacteristic mistakes, but Jackson and Scaman closed strong with scores of 9.925 and 9.9, respectively.
Cal started the night on bars, recording a 47.975, while TWU scored a 46.600 on beam in its first rotation. The Bears added scores of 48.450 (beam), 49.025 (floor) and 48.775 (vault), while the Pioneers posted marks of 46.325 (floor), 48.150 (vault) and 47.175 (bars).
The Sooners conclude the weekend with a trip to No. 16 Arkansas on Sunday, Jan. 17. The meet is slated for a 2 p.m. CT start inside Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark., and will stream online on SEC Network + through WatchESPN.
OU will return home on Friday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Iowa State and Arizona State in the Beauty and the Beast Meet, hosted in conjunction with OU wrestling.
