NORMAN – Vionise Pierre-Louis tied her career-high with 15 points and led the Sooners with a game-high seven rebounds as No. 17/19 Oklahoma women's basketball defeated Kansas State, 68-58, Sunday at Lloyd Noble Center.
Pierre-Louis was one of four Sooners (12-3, 3-1 Big 12) in double figures, scoring 11 of her 15 points in the second half. The sophomore center was a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line against the Wildcats (10-5, 0-4 Big 12) to a set a career-high in free throws made in a single game.
Redshirt senior forward Kaylon Williams recorded her 15th straight game in double-digit scoring, finishing with 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and an 8-of-10 performance from the free throw line.
“Vivi (Vionise Pierre-Louis) came in for the second half and really changed the game with her defense. Kay Kay (Kaylon Williams) got going on the glass in the second half, and the point production and the rebounds we got from the interior were the differences in the game,” OU head coach Sherri Coale said following the win. “Kansas State does a lot of things that really mess with you. They're long in their zone, they play it well, they play it hard and they're scrappy. Defensively they give you a lot of problems if you're not making shots on the perimeter.”
Derica Wyatt chipped in 11 points, knocking down three 3-pointers for the Sooners against K-State, while Gabbi Ortiz finished with 10 points and three assists.
The Sooners did the majority of their damage at the free throw line, hitting a season-high 28 free throws on 34 attempts in the victory. OU's .824 free throw percentage was also a season-high. OU closed the contest by hitting 21-of-26 free throws in the second half.
OU, who led for the entire game, put together a dominant first quarter, outscoring the Wildcats, 22-8, in the opening frame by holding K-State to just 3-of-12 (.250) shooting to begin the game. Eight different Sooners scored in the first quarter as OU closed the opening stanza on a 16-2 run.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second and third quarters as the Sooners were held to just 19 points in the two frames. K-State cut the OU lead down to four points twice midway through the fourth quarter, but 3-pointers from Shaya Kellogg and Wyatt stopped the Wildcats from making it a one possession game.
K-State trimmed the lead back down to 62-58 with 0:46 left, but the Sooners answered again with six straight free throws to seal the game. OU was 10-of-12 from the charity stripe in the final 2:00 to hold on for the win.
The Wildcats outshot the Sooners, .368-.347, while OU finished with a .286 mark from 3-point range to K-State's .158 mark. OU moved to 11-0 this season when winning the battle on the glass, outrebounding K-State by a 45-27 margin. The Sooners' scored 19 points off 16 K-State turnovers and OU's bench finished with 27 points on Sunday.
Junior center Breanna Lewis was one of two K-State players in doubles figures, finishing with a game-high 20 points. Lewis also led the Wildcats with six rebounds. Megan Deines scored 10 points and tallied a game-high six steals.
The Sooners return to action on Saturday for their first Bedlam matchup of the season at Oklahoma State. Tip-off is set for noon in Stillwater and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma/Fox Sports Southwest.
