NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team fell to Iowa State in its annual “Pledge for a Cure” match, 3-1, at McCasland Field House on Wednesday evening. The Sooners, who have lost three in a row, fell to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12, while the Cyclones improved to 9-4 and 2-0.

Aside from attempting to overcome a large deficit in the third, Oklahoma played Iowa State tight throughout the night. The Sooners claimed a first set win, 30-28, as redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) fired home three-straight kills to finish off the lengthy first set. Each team had two chances at set-point before OU pulled out the win.

Oklahoma was narrowly edged, 25-23, in the second to go into the break even at a set apiece. Opening the third, the Cyclones ran out to a 9-2 lead and led by as many as eight on various occasions, including as early as 16-8. The fourth set went to Iowa State, 25-23. Tied, 20-20, the Cyclones earned five of the last eight points of the night to put the match away.

“We need to execute better,” began head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We talk about it in practice and we've got to translate what we do in practice to the game. We did it a lot better today, so I was pleased with that, but we've got to do it a lot more often.”

Morgan Kuhrt and Alexis Conaway led the ISU attack with 17 kills each. Kuhrt hit .467, while Conaway hit .429 to lead a Cyclone side that hit a collective .261 to the Sooners .243. Setter Monique Harris dished out 58 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double effort.

Ward led Oklahoma with 16 kills, hit .261 and recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 10 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) and junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) joined Ward in double figures with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Hazelwood hit a team-best .429 with three blocks, while Gardiner posted her team-leading sixth double-double as she added 15 digs and three blocks.

After bringing back the 5-1 style offense at Texas Tech last Wednesday, the Sooners returned to the 6-2 they ran to finish out non-conference play. Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) and freshman Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) each dished out 22 assists. Alford contributed 11 digs for her first career double-double, while Doyle tallied eight. Senior libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) tied for the team-lead in digs with Gardiner at 15.

Oklahoma remains at home this weekend to face Baylor on Saturday, October 3. The match begins at 7:00 pm and admission is free.
