NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team capped off an unbeaten weekend of play with a 3-0 shutout victory over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.
The Sooners (6-4-1 overall, 1-0-1 Big 12) outshot the Cyclones (5-6-0 overall, 0-2-0 Big 12) by a mark of 19-9, including a seven to three advantage in shots on goal.
In the 34th minute, sophomore midfielder/defender Rasha Roberts opened the scoring for OU. Freshman Kaylee Dao assisted on the score with a well-aimed cross, which Roberts sent in for her second goal of the season.
OU built its advantage to 2-0 off a penalty kick from sophomore defender Madeline Brem. The Sooners received the scoring opportunity after Iowa State was whistled for a handball violation inside the box.
The Sooners' final goal came in the 73rd minute from junior midfielder Shiloh Price. After a Chelsea Jackson shot was saved and parried away by Iowa State goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon, Price tapped it in off the rebound for her first score of the season.
Price finished the contest with a match-high seven shots, two of which were on goal, in 39 minutes of play. Jackson recorded six shots for the Sooners.
With the win, OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade moved to 4-4-1 on the season. All four of Stade's wins have come in shutout form, and the Sooners have not allowed an opponent score in 349 minutes (last came in the 31st minute against Tulsa on Friday, Sept. 18). Stade had three saves against Iowa State on Sunday.
Texas Tech's Hendon finished with four saves in 90 minutes of action. Junior defender Kourtney Camy led the Red Raiders with four shots.
OU concluded its four-game homestand with a 3-0-1 record, defeating the Cyclones, Tulsa and then-No. 18 Arizona State. The Sooners tied with No. 15 Texas Tech on Friday night in a double-overtime game to open Big 12 play.
Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter categorized the win against Iowa State as a “professional performance” after his squad played down a player for 40 minutes against Texas Tech.
Potter said that his team has continued to improve throughout the season, showing that it is capable of competing with other squads with just one loss coming in regulation.
“I would say we're doing a better job on both sides of the ball to show a more complete performance,” Potter explained. “We're not there yet, but we're definitely moving closer toward it. When you do that good things happen. You score goals and you keep people off of your scoresheet. It's important that we have that kind of mentality at home, but now we're going to go take it on the road.”
Potter added that he has seen his team's confidence build.
“I really like the way we're starting to grow in confidence to keep the ball,” Potter said. “Our composure to keep it in play, bring each other into the game and build numbers are very encouraging. The type of ball we play is something we're working on and it's coming off in a real game.”
The Sooners close out non-conference play with a couple of road matches next week. OU will face Oral Roberts at 2 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Tulsa, Okla. That contest was rescheduled following a cancellation due to a power outage during the original meeting in Norman on Sept. 4. The Sooners will then play at Illinois State at 11 a.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 2 in Normal, Ill.
