LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team fell to Texas Tech in its Big 12 opener on Wednesday night. The Sooners, who had won each of their last seven conference openers, dropped to 6-7, while the Red Raiders improved to 12-3.
The loss also marked the first for Oklahoma to Tech since 2005. The Sooners, who are 19-3 under 12th-year head coach Santiago Restrepo, had won 19 in a row against the Red Raiders.
The two sides traded sets through the first four. Oklahoma claimed the first, 25-20, and Texas Tech took the second, 25-21, to make it a set apiece heading into the break. The Sooners looked their sharpest with a 25-18 win in the third, but the Red Raiders responded with a dominant 25-17 win in the fourth to force the fifth and deciding set. TTU led, 8-5, at the switch and got to match-point at 14-13. OU held off match-point on five occasions before Tech won the set, 19-17, and ultimately the match.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) dished out 59 assists, one shy of her career-high, and added 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) and Tech's Jenna Allen led all players with 18 kills. Ward hit .306 with 12 digs for her fourth double-double and Allen notched 12 digs for the Red Raiders.
For Texas Tech, Lauren Douglass added 17 kills, on a .343 attack rate, and four blocks. Katy Keenan and Audrey Fragniere were inserted into the TTU rotation for the fourth set and ignited the offense as they combined for 12 kills and a .400 attack rate in just two sets of play.
Oklahoma had four players finish the match in double-digit kills and outhit Texas Tech, .280-.205. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) posted her team-leading fifth double-double with a 14-kill, 13-dig effort with five block assists. Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) posted 13 kills and sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) added 12 kills on a .385 hitting percentage to go with six blocks.
Tech's Carlie Foust led all players with 29 digs, while OU senior libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Sooners with 18.
