Sooners Hand Tulsa First Loss of Season

September 18, 2015 | Soccer

NORMAN Behind a strong overall performance, the Oklahoma soccer team handed in-state foe Tulsa its first loss of the season by a score of 2-1 in front of 1,122 fans at John Crain Field.

The Sooners (4-4-0 overall) outshot the Golden Hurricane (8-1-0 overall) by a mark of 20-6. The OU defense held strong all night against Tulsa, which entered the contest averaging 2.50 goals and 20.9 shots per contest.

OU matched its defensive intensity with offensive efficiency. Nine of OU's 20 shots were on goal. Junior forward Liz Keester led the Sooners with six shots, including two on goal, while junior midfielder Shiloh Price had four.

Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said he is happy with the all-around performance from his squad.

“Well, Tulsa's 8-0 for a reason, which means they're doing a good job at what they do,” Potter said. “It was important for us tonight to match the endeavor that they put into the game and show that kind of grit and determination. We knew it wasn't going to be the easiest thing to do.

“I'm really pleased with the way that we started the game,” Potter continued. “Then obviously in the second half what was encouraging to see was the way we tried to imprint the things that we talked about, and obviously the half for the most part went our way. What's most pleasing is we kept our discipline and organization defensively, so that gave us a chance. Sure enough the set piece was the difference.”

The Sooners struck early when senior defender Laura Rayfield sent a free kick from the right corner of the box into the back of the net in the seventh minute. It was the second score of the season for Rayfield, the other coming on a penalty kick.

Tulsa tied up the contest in the 31st minute. Senior midfielder Alexa Sidorakis had the initial shot that was deflected by OU sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Fahrner, but sophomore forward Christina Holmes found it for the equalizer and her fifth score of the season.

The Sooners went up 2-1 in the 63rd minute following a free kick from Rayfield that midfielder Tori Bowman found for the game-winning goal. The score was Bowman's second of her sophomore campaign.

The game was a physical one throughout, with 22 total fouls and five total yellow cards, three to OU and two to Tulsa.

In her second start of the year, Fahrner had two saves and moved to 2-0-0 on the season. Tulsa sophomore goalkeeper Courtney McKeon fell to 3-1-0 with the loss. She had seven saves in the game.

The Sooners continue their homestand when they close out the weekend on Sunday when they host No. 18 Arizona State at noon CT at John Crain Field. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU.
