NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma team volleyball suffered a 3-1 setback to No. 7 Washington at the OU Invitational finale at McCasland Field House on Friday night. The Sooners evened their record at 6-6, while the Huskies remained unbeaten at 10-0.

Washington claimed the match by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-22. Oklahoma snapped the Huskies' perfect, 28-0 record in sets played this season with the win in the second set. For the second straight set, the Sooners led 14-11, but unlike in the first, when they were set off course by a 14-5 UW run, were able to go into the break even at a set apiece.

“In the second set, we didn't make too many mistakes. We had nine errors in the first and just two in the second so that was a lot better,” stated head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We adjusted our help-blocking and our scheme a little bit better to their offense and it worked in that set.”

The third was dominated by Washington, which hit a collective .565 for the set. In the fourth, the Huskies led 13-8 when Oklahoma began to rally. A 9-5 advantage for the Sooners cut the lead to one with a kill from junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) and a kill from senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) tied the set, 18-18. The set would be tied once more at 20-20 before UW put away the match.

Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) and junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) tied for the team-high in kills with 11. Ward added a match-high 15 digs to pick up her third double-double of the season. Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) also reached double figures with 10 kills.

For Washington, Courtney Schwan led the way with a match-high 16 kills on a .467 attack rate as the Huskies hit .402 as a team. Tia Scambray and Melanie Wade tallied 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Doyle and UW's Katy Beals tied for the match-lead in assists at 30. Scambray was one of three Huskies in double figures for digs with a team-leading 14.

In the middle for OU, junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) totaled nine kills, five blocks and hit .368, while sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) went for eight kills on a .538 hitting percentage.

The Sooners return to action when they open Big 12 play at Texas Tech on Wednesday, September 23.
