Sooners Drop OT Decision at No. 2 Stanford
September 13, 2015 | Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. — The Oklahoma soccer team pushed No. 2 Stanford to overtime on Sunday afternoon but eventually fell by a score of 2-1 in front of a crowd of 1,042 inside Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
For the second straight match, the Sooners (3-4-0 overall) struggled to get their offense going, recording just four shots against the Cardinal (5-1-0 overall). Three of those shots came in the last eight and half minutes of regulation.
In comparison, Stanford put up 23 shots, a season high for an OU opponent. Eight of those shots were on goal.
Despite the lopsided statistics, OU found some offense late and fought back to tie the contest in the 88th minute. When Stanford junior goalkeeper Jane Campbell came out to clear a cross, the ball found OU freshman forward/midfielder Kaylee Dao, who headed it in for the equalizer and her second score of the season.
"Stanford is a benchmark game," OU head coach Matt Potter said. "While disappointed to fall behind to an early goal, we have to be encouraged by the group's resolve to execute some thoughts from halftime and the endeavor to find a way to get back into the game."
The game-winning goal came from Stanford freshman defender/forward Tegan McGrady, who headed in the score following a cross from senior forward Haley Rosen on a set play in the 92nd minute. The Cardinal's first goal came from Rosen in the fifth minute.
"In overtime we have been beaten in a manner that makes us have to look at ourselves; however, Stanford showed again why it is one of the nation's elite," Potter said.
It was the third time this season that the Sooners have gone to overtime, with all three resulting in 2-1 defeats. OU took both Furman and then-No. 11 South Carolina to two overtimes on the road.
OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade had six saves, her second most this season. She fell to 2-4-0 overall with the loss. Stanford's Campbell finished with two saves in 91:15 in goal.
Along with Dao, junior Liz Keester and sophomores Tori Bowman and Lizzie Luallin recorded shots in the contest.
The Sooners start a four-game homestand next weekend when they welcome Tulsa and No. 22 Arizona State to Norman. OU will face the Golden Hurricane on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. CT before taking on the Sun Devils at noon on Sunday, Sept. 20. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU.
"We have much to take from the weekend, showing we can compete on the biggest of stages," Potter said. "Those lessons will be something for us to reflect and build on as we return home."
