Sooners Finish First, Second at North Texas

NORMAN – In their season debuts, sophomore Sarah Scott and redshirt senior Zac Randall led the Sooner women's and men's cross country teams to top finishes at the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton, Texas Saturday. The Sooner women earned their first team win of the season behind Scott's second-place team scoring finish with her time of 18:04.56, while Randall's second-place finish time of 19:31.27 led the men to a top-two finish.
The University of Oklahoma women outpaced eight other schools, including Big 12 rivals Baylor and TCU en route to their win. OU had three additional top-10 finishes (team scoring) in the women's 5,000-meter race including Abbey Macein fifth (18:25.85), Alexandria Arndorfer in sixth(18:27.88), and Hayley Redwine in ninth (18:32.00). It is the second top-10 finish for freshman Arndorfer, whose 10th place finish in the season opener on Sept. 1 was the top placement at the OSU Opener for OU women.
“I was definitely pleased with the women's result because whatever meet we're at, winning is a great result,” said Jason Dunn, associate head coach for cross country. “It's a young women's group and Sarah definitely did a nice job for us out front. It's her first race in quite a while and she came out aggressively.
“We've been very pleased with Alexandria as well,” he continued. “She just goes out and takes care of business. We feel like she has a really bright future.”
Sooner women Isabella Rose (18:47.92), Bryce Perry (19:00.75), Christa Boettiger (19:04.85), Sophia Fernald (19:10.72), and Madison Heidenburg (19:20.09) had top-25 finishes in the 85-runner event. Lauren Gibbs (19:39.62) and Lane Maguire (19:48.49) also competed for OU.
The men wrapped up the day with a trio of top-10 finishes as Will Hogston and Allen Eke placing fourth and ninth. In his season debut, Hogston ran a 19:36.71 and Eke followed with a 19:50.49.
All six Sooner competitors placed in the top 30 in a field of 73 and, as a team, OU placed behind North Texas, the host school. Matt Brafford came in 13th (20:00.55), Brendan Taylor in 14th (20:04.74), and Hunter Heaton ended the day for the Sooners in 26th (20:28.90), respectively.
“The guys who ran did a pretty good job for us,” Dunn said. “Zac hasn't run many cross country races for us, but having a guy who's older and mature helps. He ran a really tough race out front.”
