BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team pushed No. 24 Colorado to five sets, but ultimately fell, 3-2, at the Coors Events Center. The Sooners completed the Omni Hotels Classic 0-3, while the Buffaloes finished 2-1.
Oklahoma claimed the first set 25-20 before Colorado took the next two by scores of 25-22 and 25-21. The Sooners forced a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-21, despite hitting a match-low .036 in the set. For the match, they hit a weekend-best .278 to the Buffs .283.
In the fifth, Colorado used a 5-0 run to create separation and go in front, 7-3. Oklahoma won two points prior to the switch, but from there CU finished off the match by winning seven of the final 10 points.
Alexis Austin led all players with 23 kills for Colorado. Gabby Simpson also reached double figures for the Buffs with 12 to go with 25 assists and seven digs. Nicole Edelman led the team with 30 assists, while racking up six kills.
For the Sooners, senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) led the attack with 16 kills and four service aces to go with six digs and five blocks. Redshirt-junior Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) picked up her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Ward and junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) were each named to the All-Tournament Team. Spann hit .350 with eight kills and five blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) added nine kills on a .353 attack rate with a team-high seven blocks, while junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) hit a team-high .500 with seven kills, six digs and six blocks.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) paced the offense with 42 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double with nine.
The Sooners are at home this week for their annual NIKE Invitational. The action gets underway Thursday, September 3 against Little Rock at 7:00 pm.
