NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Little Rock at McCasland Field House on Thursday night. The win moved the Sooners to 1-3 on the season, while the Trojans are winless at 0-4.
Oklahoma hit a collective .371 for the match with three hitters finishing the match with an attack rate over .400; led by junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) at .562. She totaled 10 kills and a match-high seven blocks.
“We went from a 5-1 to a 6-2, tonight,” said head coach Santiago Restrepo. “Adding more hitters gives a little more freedom for the hitter to hit against one block instead of seeing a double block. [Our hitting] has a lot to do with the passing, but it also had a lot to do with the setters. It's about them making good choices for the hitters.”
The Sooners took the first set, 25-17, and hit an impressive .552 en route to a 25-19 win in the second. They went on to close out the match with a 25-21 win in the third.
Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) led all players with 11 kills, hit .435, picked up five digs and contributed three blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) hit .500 on five kills, while junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) added eight kills and senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) added six.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) started the match at setter for OU and dished out 16 assists to go with eight digs. Freshman Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) came off the bench to lead the offense with 22 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) made her first career appearance and notched a match-leading 12 digs.
The Sooners improved to 9-1 all-time against Little Rock and 28-14 in home openers, including a 10-2 record under Restrepo.
Oklahoma is in action Friday night at 7:00 pm against North Texas. On Saturday, the Sooners host Central Arkansas at 12:00 pm. Admission to Saturday's match is free.
