BOULDER, Colo. – After leading two sets to one, the University of Oklahoma volleyball team suffered a 3-2 setback to San Diego at the Omni Hotels Classic hosted by Colorado on Saturday morning. The Sooners dropped to 0-2 on the young season, while the Toreros improved to 2-0.
Oklahoma's one-set advantage heading to the fourth came from sets scores of 26-24, 20-25 and 25-18. The two sides traded runs in the second with San Diego finishing the set on a 12-5 run to tie the match at a set apiece. The Sooners went up a set with three kills in the final four points of the third from junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas).
In the fourth, it was another big run from USD that pushed the set in its favor. After the Toreros burned a timeout down 18-15, they rattled off 10 of the next 11 points to force a fifth and deciding set. San Diego jumped out to an early lead in the fifth before Oklahoma got within a point at 6-5, but that was the closest it would get.
Canace Finley led all players with 18 kills to go with seven digs and five blocks for the Toreros. She was joined in double figures by Lisa Kramer and Merve Tanyel at 11 apiece.
Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) led the Sooners with 13 kills. Spann and junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) each tallied 10. Gardiner registered OU's first double-double of the season as she added 15 digs as well as three service aces. Spann led all players with nine blocks as Oklahoma totaled 14 to San Diego's 12.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) dished out 43 assists, while senior libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) picked up 23 digs.
The Sooners are back in action later tonight against No. 24 Colorado at 8:00 pm CT.
