BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team led early in each of the first three sets, but claimed just one on the way to a 3-1 defeat to No. 9 Florida State at the Omni Hotels Classic hosted by the University of Colorado. The Sooners (0-1) fell by scores of 21-15, 23-25, 25-21 and 18-25.
After dropping the first two, Oklahoma forced a fourth by hitting .357 in the third. In the fourth, the Sooners trailed by as many as six at 12-6 before trimming the lead to 14-13. From there, the Seminoles (1-0) pulled away by winning 11 of the final 16 points.
Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) led OU with 14 kills, while FSU's Nicole Walch led all players with 22 on a .317 attack rate with nine digs. Ward added three digs, three assists and two blocks.
For the match, the Seminoles hit .299 to the Sooners .197. Junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) hit a match-high .455 with 11 kills to go with four blocks. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) added 10 kills and a team-high eight digs. Katie Horton tacked on 11 kills, while hitting .348 for Florida State.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) dished out a match-high 41 assists for the Sooners to go with seven digs. The Seminole setting duties were split between Hailey Luke with 26 helpers and Brianne Burkert with 17. FSU libero Cecilie Woie led all players with 14 digs.
Oklahoma returns to action tomorrow with an 11:00 am CT match against San Diego followed by an 8:00 pm contest vs. No. 24 Colorado.
