NORMAN – Kelsey Stevens tied a career high with 12 strikeouts, while Erin Miller went 4-4 with four extra base hits and six RBI as Oklahoma (16-3) ran its winning streak to six games with a 9-0, six-inning win over Samford (15-6) at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament in Norman.
With the victory, OU has now thrown five straight shutouts. It's the team's longest shutout streak since 2013 when it shut out seven straight opponents from March 9-17.
After Paige Parker threw a perfect game earlier in the day against Missouri State, Stevens was almost as dominant against the Bulldogs in the night cap. She struck out 12 batters for the third time in her career, though her first as a Sooner. As a freshman at Stanford in 2013, Stevens struck out 12 against Kentucky on Feb. 10 and on May 4 against Cal.
The 12 strikeouts are the most for an OU pitcher since Michelle Gascoigne had 12 in game two of the Women's College World Series championship game that gave OU its second national title on June 4, 2013.
Stevens struck out at least one batter in every inning, including getting all three outs via strikeout in the fifth and sixth. She also posted multi-strikeout innings in the first and third innings.
In addition to her 12 strikeouts, Stevens walked one and allowed six hits to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Meanwhile, at the plate, Miller had a career day as she went 4-4 with a career best six runs batted in. She tripled twice to tie a school record, doubled and hit the game-ending walk-off homer in the sixth inning.
The four hits are the most by an OU player this season, while her four extra base hits were the most by a Sooner since Shelby Pendley did it last season against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Feb. 28 when she had two doubles and two homers.
Oklahoma wasted little time against Samford, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first.
With one out, senior Lauren Chamberlain went the opposite way for her team-best ninth home run of the season and the 81st of her career. Sitting sixth on the all-time list, Chamberlain is now nine home runs away from tying UCLA's Stacey Nuveman for the all-time mark and 10 away from breaking it.
Later in the inning, junior Kady Self singled up the middle and came around to score when Miller hit the first of her two triples.
In the third, Miller drove in two more runs with her second triple of the game. It was the 10th time that a Sooner had tripled twice in the same game, the last of which was done by Pendley against UAB last season on April 26.
Samford's best scoring opportunity came in the fifth when it loaded the bases with two outs. Stevens got OU of the jam though as she struck out pinch hitter Shelby Scott.
In the next inning, OU picked up its ninth run-rule win of the season thanks to a five-run sixth.
Junior Leslie Miller led off with a pinch-hit single to short. After senior Jessica Vest re-entered the game to run at first, freshman Kelsey Arnold dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Vest to second. A single to right field by freshman Nicole Pendley put runners on the corners and one out for Chamberlain, who drove a deep fly to left field for a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Parker followed with a single down the left field line, which moved Nicole Pendley to third. After a pinch-hit RBI double by junior Paris Townsend, Erin Miller ended the game with a three-run homer to center field. It was her second homer of the season and the fifth of her career.
Oklahoma concludes play at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament Sunday with another doubleheader. First up is another matchup against Samford at 12:15 p.m., and that is followed by a game against Missouri State at 2:30 p.m.
