NORMAN – Paige Parker became the first player in Oklahoma history to throw two perfect games in one season as the Sooners (15-3) defeated Missouri State, 10-0, in five innings in their home opener at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament in Norman.
Parker, who threw a perfect game at Hawaii on Feb. 7, struck out three as she faced the minimum 15 batters as OU coasted to its fourth consecutive shutout. She joins Jennifer Stewart as the only Sooners to throw multiple perfect games in a career, though Parker is the first to do it in one season. Stewart threw her first in 1999 and her second in 2002.
In throwing the 10th perfect game and 42nd no-hitter in OU history, Parker got seven groundouts, three pop ups, two swinging strikeouts, two flyouts and two strikeouts looking. She needed only 64 pitches to improve to 6-2 on the season.
While Parker was doing her part to control MSU (8-9), senior Lauren Chamberlain provided the offense as she drove in six runs, one off her season and career high. Chamberlain hit a three-run double in the third and added a walk-off, three-run homer in the fifth.
The home run was the eighth of Chamberlain's season and No. 80 in her illustrious career. She is one of just six players in NCAA DI history to reach the 80-homer plateau, and is now 10 away from tying the all-time mark of 90.
In the first inning, Parker helped her own cause by hitting a solo home run to center field. The two-out blast was the third of her season.
The Sooners then got another long-ball in the second and manufactured a run to make it 3-0.
Junior Whitney Ellis led off the frame and fell behind in the count 1-2. After fouling off a pitch to stay alive, she turned on a 2-2 offering and drove it over the bleachers in left field for her first home run of the season. The solo shot was the 12th of her career.
Freshman Lea Wodach followed Ellis and drew a five-pitch walk. A sacrifice bunt from fellow freshman Kelsey Arnold moved Wodach into scoring position before freshman Nicole Pendley hit a sharp single to center field to make it 3-0 in the Sooners' favor.
Oklahoma broke the game open with a four-run third inning.
Facing Missouri State relief pitcher Jessie Van Es, junior Kady Self greeted her with a single on the first pitch to right field. A sacrifice bunt and groundout moved Self to third, and she came around to score when Wodach doubled to left center.
The inning continued as Arnold walked and Pendley reached on a fielding error. The two-out error, which loaded the bases, ended up costing the Bears as Chamberlain cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field to extend OU's lead to 7-0.
In the fifth, Ellis led off with a walk. After two quick outs, Pendley walked to bring Chamberlain to the plate, and she hit the first walk-off homer for OU since Ellis did it March 4 of last season against Louisiana Tech.
