NORMAN – The top-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team rewrote history, again, as it topped its own NCAA record on Saturday in a showdown between the nation's top two teams, defeating No. 2 Iliinois 457.300 to 434.200 and moving to a perfect 11-0 record on the season.
The record-breaking score tops a previous NCAA record of 456.400, set by the Sooners on Feb. 14 against No. 5 Michigan. It is the second time Oklahoma has surpassed the 450-mark this season, a feat that had previously not been achieved by any team in NCAA history.
“I didn't even realize that we had broken the record until I went over to talk to President David Boren and Athletic Director Joe Castiglione,” said head coach Mark Williams. “His wife was like 'did you see the score? You broke it again!' Hey, we looked great tonight.
“We stuck as many routines as we did the last time that we broke the record. I feel like that we are in a great spot. We have to keep going. We haven't done anything until we get into conference. We have to keep everybody healthy and everybody focused.”
The Sooners were stellar across all events on the night, recording 24 scores of 15 or higher to meet or exceed the program record on three of the six events, including floor exercise, pommel horse and still rings.
“We just aren't giving much away,” said Williams. “Execution wise the guys are performing at a really high level and they're finishing. They are in great physical condition so when they get to the dismount they aren't really tired about landing and tonight they were great.
OU dominated from the opening routine, as the Sooners picked up a huge 77.950 on floor, good enough to shatter the previous program record of 76.650, also set against Michigan in their previous meet. The Crimson and Cream was led by sophomore Colin Van Wicklen, scoring a career-high 15.900 in the anchor position. Including Van Wicklen, four of the five floor performers set career-highs on the event with Hunter Justus posting a 15.500, Todd Dowdy scoring a 15.550 and Alec Robin earning a 15.800.
They continued momentum onto the pommel horse, where all five gymnasts earned a 15.1 or higher. Senior Michael Reid took the event title with a 15.850 to help the Sooners set another program record score of 76.350 on the event. Allan Bower turned in a 15.200, his first of three scores over 15 on Friday.
“Allan Bower just made the (U.S.) Senior National Team last weekend,” said Williams. “It's amazing that he had two days of competition last weekend and came back and did three events for us this weekend. I think he stuck every landing on all his events. He stuck vault, his parallel bars and pommel horse. He did a great job.”
On the rings, Oklahoma matched its previous program-high of a 76.500, which was also set the last time out against Michigan, as Justus continued his career night with a second career-best score of 15.350 to set the tone for the Sooners on the apparatus. Oklahoma was anchored by Michael Squires' outstanding 16.300 on the event, also matching a career-best for the Sooner.
Moving to vault, Oklahoma tied the second-highest score in program history with a 75.050 led by Kanji Oyama's career-best score of 15.600, receiving two outstanding execution scores of 9.9. Not far behind Oyama's score, Bower recorded a career-best 15.450 while Josh Yee picked up a solid 15.100 to contribute.
As the team entered the fifth rotation of the night on parallel bars, Bower earned a 15.250 in the leadoff position, followed by Dylan Akers notching a 15.000 and Sergey Resnick, taking the individual crown on the apparatus with a 15.400.
The Sooners had a team score of 380.650 heading into the sixth and final event, the high bar, needing a score 75.750 to match the NCAA record the team set last time out. Like two weeks ago versus Michigan, the team did not disappoint in the closing event. All five Sooners posted scores of 15.000 or higher with Danny Berardini nailing his routine for a 15.550 and William Clement finishing the night with a mark of 15.400 to give OU a final score of 457.300.
Friday's meet marked the 14th and final competition in McCasland Field House for the seniors on the OU squad, a venue in which the team never lost a meet, including the MPSF Championship in 2014.
After spending nearly a month at home the Sooners will be back on the road next weekend as the squad heads to California to take on Cal-Berkley on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. CT.
