NORMAN – The top-ranked Sooner men's gymnastics team closed out the regular season with a 449.700 to 425.700 victory over No. 8 Ohio State to finish the regular season with a perfect record of 13-0. The unblemished regular season is the Crimson and Cream's first since the 2011 season when OU posted a record of 12-0.
“In some ways we were a little flat at the beginning but I thought we finished really well,” said head coach Mark Williams. “The score is a great way to finish the regular season and we are anxious to move on to the post-season.”
Oklahoma recorded solid performances across all six events on its senior night against the Buckeyes, sweeping every individual event title of the night. Of the six event winners, four were seniors. They contribute to a senior class of seven that were honored during and after the meet.
“The senior leadership has been unbelievable,” said Williams. “That's why we are doing so well. I've been thrilled with this group as a team and these seniors who have done some really special and amazing things throughout their career.”
At the close of the regular season, the Sooners score of 449.700 extends a 440-plus scoring streak to all seven competitions in 2015. OU is the only team in the NCAA to accomplish that feat. The Sooners nearly reached the 450-mark for the third time this season, as no other team in NCAA history has hit or exceeded a score of 450 in NCAA history.
“I applaud these guys because they have really worked hard,” said Williams. “They know how much work they have to do to be in contention for a National Championship and they would like to make this year very special to send out our seniors. From beginning the mission has been 'National Championship' and I think we're on track for that.”
Led by defending national champion Alec Robin's 15.700, Oklahoma started the competition with a 74.100 after the first rotation on floor. Along with Robin, Kanji Oyama earned a 15.500 and Dillon Akers recorded a 14.850 to contribute.
The Sooners picked up momentum on pommel horse, as senior Michael Reid nabbed his fifth title on the event this season with a 15.600. He led the way to a 75.050 team score for the Sooners on the apparatus, in front of a 15.050 from Allan Bowers.
As OU entered its third rotation, senior Michael Squires was dominant once again, recording a huge 16.050 on rings to lead the Sooners and finish the regular season undefeated on the apparatus. The score marked an outstanding sixth 16-plus score in seven meets this season for the senior. In addition to Squires, Thao Hoang matched his career-best 15.450 while Reese Rickett earned a career-high 15.050 to help the Sooners to a 75.950 on the rotation.
Moving into vault, Bower matched a career-high 15.450 for Oklahoma and captured the event title. In addition to Bower, three more Sooners recorded scores of 15-plus to contribute to a 74.800 on the event. Colin Van Wicklen posted a 15.300, while Josh Yee scored a 15.100 and Oyama picked up a 15.050.
In the fifth rotation, OU was solid on parallel bars with a 74.900 as Bower pulled down a second event title on the night with a 15.200. Reid was on the heels of Bower with a 15.100 while Danny Berardini also picked up a 14.950.
To close out the night, the Sooners finished strong on the high bar with three scores of 15-plus. Senior Jacoby Rubin took the event title to complete the individual event sweep for Oklahoma with a 15.500, followed by Berardini and William Clement with a pair of 15.300s.
With the victory, the OU seniors finished their careers without ever losing a home competition in Norman over the four years. The Sooners came out victorious in all 14 home regular season competitions.
The Sooners do not have a competition next week, as the team will be tuning up for the MPSF Championships on Saturday, March 28 at 6 p.m. CT in Colorado Springs, Colo.
