OU in Tennessee for Last Fall Regatta
November 06, 2015 | Rowing
NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team returns to the course this weekend (Nov. 7-8) in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Head of the Hooch.
The Sooners will compete 12 varsity boats and one novice eight on the 5,000-meter course on the Tennessee River, which marks the second varsity and first novice regatta of the fall season. At the Head of the Oklahoma, the Sooners grabbed two of the top five spots in the collegiate eight race and three of the top five, including first and second place, in the collegiate four. OU claimed the top 10 spots in the women's open pairs competition.
“The team has been steadily improving since the start of the semester and it's exciting to see them getting faster every day in practice,” OU Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. “We have a group of highly motivated athletes this year and it's been fun to see them develop individually and as a team. I think we're all excited to see what we can do this weekend.”
The Sooners will kick off the Head of the Hooch at 10:14 a.m. CT on Saturday when they race two boats in the women's championship eight competition. The women's college and club novice eight will begin at 1:29 p.m., and the women's championship four, where OU will race four boats, is slated for 3:07 p.m.
Oklahoma returns to the Hooch on Sunday at 11:13 a.m. with four boats racing in the women's open pair race. The two boats racing in the women's open eight will conclude the weekend at 11:53 a.m.
The Head of the Hooch is one of the world's largest regattas with participants from over 200 different organizations from numerous states and countries.
In addition to the Head of the Hooch, two OU novice boats will be competing on Saturday against UCO at the UCO Boathouse on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City. The Sooners, who will race one novice eight and one novice four, will begin competition at 9 a.m. CT.
