November 04, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Senior guard Buddy Hield was the Big 12 Player of the Year. He was a third team All-American. What is more impressive about Buddy Hield though? The guy never stops. Everything that happens on the court is blessed with Hield's commentary, and according to the rest of the Sooner basketball team, not everyone is a fan. Since Buddy Love does most of the talking amongst his team, we thought it would be nice to give his teammates a chance to chime in.
"He's extremely loud. It's weird because you won't even know what he's saying. He'll say something real loud and just 'yeah, yeah,' and we'll just be 'yeah, Buddy, yeah. Let's go. Let's go.' We don't even know what he's saying sometimes. It's crazy."
"Half of the time you won't understand him and the other half he's just yelling. He's a really competitive guy. He's just yelling at people like 'Come on, come on.' I don't even know what he's saying really."
"Buddy Hield is louder than my alarm clock in the morning. That would be waking me up. But Buddy, he's going to wake you up no matter what…he's extremely loud."
"I would be able to wake up. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep. Once he gets you going and once he starts talking, there's no stopping him. He's one of the loudest guys I've ever met."
"He has a bunch of sounds. He has many sounds. He doesn't even have to say a word. He's just going to make a sound just to get the ball."
"He's the loudest one on our team. He's always saying something, no matter what it is. He's never quiet about it. He's just loud."
"I don't know what I would compare it to, but he never shuts up."
"Probably like the third or fourth snooze, you know how annoying that is, that's probably what he is. You'd definitely wake up angry. It doesn't matter what the context is, what he's talking about, he's always loud."
"On the court, you always know when he's open because he has a loud squeal, kind of girl sound. Whether we're at my house hanging out or at the gym, he's always singing or dancing. And always saying 'Daddio.'"
"Buddy is so loud it's crazy. You can hear him coming from way down the street, like two blocks away. I promise you. But he's just so loud and he has his own dialect you could say because he's from the islands or whatever, so he talks real fast. I still don't understand what he's saying. It's just loud and fast. But I think that's how he likes it, so people don't fully understand what he's talking about."
"I think only he knows sometimes what he's trying to say. But it's funny trying to keep up with him."
"Buddy's voice is as annoying as me pulling up to the railroad tracks when I'm right next to it. I'm just waiting for it to pass by."
"I can't even duplicate it. Before we go out to the game, he's like 'hold up, hold up, hold up'. His most annoying voice is his screeching. I guess he wants the ball when he does that."
"I couldn't do it. I would have to kick him out. I don't know how Isaiah [Cousins] lives with him, honestly. I don't ask, because they both have their own little style. I don't know how they do it. But they have that connection. Buddy's a great guy, but he's annoying as heck. I don't understand how people just do that all day, every day. I need just a little bit of Buddy here, little bit of Buddy there. But he's cool."
"When you say how loud Buddy is, all I think of is just Buddy yelling out random stuff. Making some loud noises. Just being ridiculous."
"Yeah, I don't know what his issue is. You just think there's really something wrong with him. When he's yelling, he's loud. You have to see it to believe it. I can't say anything. You just have to get a GoPro and just watch him around."
"Yeah he stops sometimes. But then when it's a little bit too silent, he just comes with an outburst."
"Yeah. I don't think he can be silent for like a minute. It's hard for him."
"I would just sit far away from Buddy Hield. I'm going to make sure I have headphones so I can't hear anything he is saying and just turn the music all the way up. I'll just ignore him and fall asleep."
"He screams like a little girl. He does a lot of things. It's different from time to time."
"It would get me up, but I think it could start my day off right."
"After we beat Kansas at home at the buzzer it was so loud you couldn't hear any specific voice except for Buddy's. All you could hear was Buddy just non-stop. It was crazy. Everyone was loud but you could really only pull out Buddy's voice on the court."
"He's louder than me and I'm pretty loud. I'd say he's louder than a car horn going off over and over again at 3 a.m. He's non-stop."
"There was one time this summer when we were playing a pick-up game, and he said he got fouled but he didn't. The ball went off his knee but he of course didn't think it did, and I bet he argued for about five minutes. As soon as they told him it wasn't a foul he started yelling in my ear and was just right by me. I was like, 'Come on, man! Get away from me!'"
"He's always loud, but before the season started I was kind of struggling with my shot, and we were playing pick-up. Every time they would pass me the ball and I didn't shoot it, Buddy would yell, “SHOOT THE BALL DANIEL” just as loud as he could. For the next five minutes every time he looked at me he would be like, “Daniel, you need to shoot the ball.” He's constantly screaming. Every time he's open, you've heard his squawk. I can't even do it, but it's just all the time loud."
"The first time I heard the squawk I actually wasn't even on the team yet. He's a year older than me and I just came to watch practice. They were in there practicing and all of a sudden I hear it, and I was just thinking where is this guy from? Who is this guy? But you really get used to it. I don't really notice it that much anymore. It probably happens 25 times a practice but you don't notice it."
"If you've ever tried to sneak back in your house late at night and you go into the kitchen and you drop something and it makes a loud noise, well that's Buddy. Buddy is never quiet. It's always loud. It's like you're dropping a fork, and then another plate, and then a bowl, then a plate and then another bowl, and then your mom comes in running at you and you try to run from her, that's Buddy."
"I've heard that noise after he makes after a shot, after a board, when it's quiet or even when Coach Kruger is giving a speech. It's all the time."
