KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In an overtime contest in the first round of the Big 12 Championship, the Oklahoma soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 to No. 18 Texas Tech on Wednesday afternoon inside Swope Soccer Village.
After falling behind in the first half, the No. 4 seed Sooners (10-7-3 overall, 3-2-3 Big 12) fought back to tie up the contest and force overtime. Then, just over eight minutes into the first extra period, No. 5 seed Texas Tech (11-3-5 overall, 3-2-3 Big 12) tallied the game winner.
“We are disappointed to have lost what was a close game against a talented Texas Tech team,” fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. “Both teams showed periods of promise, and Tech showed that quality need at the end of a game between two good teams.”
In an evenly-played match, the Sooners were outshot by the Red Raiders by a mark of 15-12, with Texas Tech holding an eight to three advantage in shots on goal. Senior defender Laura Rayfield, junior midfielder Shiloh Price and sophomore defender Madeline Brem led OU with two shots apiece.
The Red Raiders opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute as freshman forward Gwennie Puente recorded her second goal of the season.
The Sooners found the equalizer in the 51st minute from junior forward Liz Keester. Off the header pass from junior midfielder Shiloh Price, Keester turned and lofted the ball right over the top of Texas Tech goalkeeper Lauren Watson. The score was the third of the season for Keester.
In the 99th minute, senior midfielder/forward Caity Heap recorded the game winner for Texas Tech off assists from senior forward Ashley Casey and senior forward Janine Beckie.
The game marked the second time this year the two squads went to extra periods, tying 0-0 in double overtime on Sept. 25 in Norman.
OU has now played in seven overtime contests in 2015, posting a 0-4-3 record in those games. The Sooners are now 1-3-2 against opponents ranked within the top 25 of the NSCAA/Continental Tires poll.
OU will learn its NCAA tournament fate on Monday, Nov. 9, at 3:30 p.m. CT. The tournament selection show will air at NCAA.com.
“We have come far and have much to be proud of and believe we have done enough to extend our season,” Potter said. “That unfortunately is out of our hands now, but we have a reason to watch Monday.”
