NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team defeated West Virginia, 3-0, for its fourth sweep in a row at McCasland Field House on Wednesday night. The Sooners lifted their record to 12-15 overall and 6-9 in the Big 12. The Mountaineers remained winless in conference play at 0-15 and 5-23 overall.
“I think we are playing at a pretty high level,” stated head coach Santiago Restrepo. “By building a huge lead, we had the opportunity to get some players in that don't always get a chance. It's great every time that you can showcase all of the kids that work extremely hard in practice.”
Oklahoma hit a collective .314 as a team to win in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18. The Sooners hit just .192 in the first, but rebounded to hit .375 and .357 in the ensuing sets.
Juniors Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) and Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) each reached double figures at 10 kills apiece for Oklahoma. Gardiner hit a season-high .769 with no errors and added eight digs and four block assists on defense. Hazelwood hit .600 with just one error and posted a match-high six block assists.
Freshman setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) dished out 32 assists and collected four digs. Sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led all players with 12 digs.
Off the bench, freshman outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) racked up six kills and hit .556; all in the third set. Freshman defensive specialist Valerie Woody (Rowlett, Texas) entered the back row in the third set for her first career appearance.
For the Mountaineers, Morgan Montgomery tallied nine kills on a .286 attack rate and Caleah Wells added seven, while hitting .357. Haley Roe totaled 28 assists and six digs at setter and Gianna Gotterba registered a team-leading 10 digs.
The Sooners wrap up the 2015 season at home on Friday afternoon against Texas. Oklahoma and the No. 3 Longhorns hit the floor for a 3:00 pm match, which will serve as OU's “Senior Day” honoring Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.), Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) and Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.).
“I would love to have people that are around Norman for Thanksgiving come out and support the team on Friday,” encouraged Restrepo. “Come out the day before Bedlam and get a huge crowd for a huge rivalry.”
