NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team wrapped up its 2015 season with a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Texas in front of 1,386 at McCasland Field House. The loss snapped a four-match win streak and ended the Sooners' season at 12-16 overall and 6-10 in the Big 12. The Longhorns head into the postseason at 25-2 and 15-1.
“I think we had our team back; everyone that started last year, but the bottom line is that last year doesn't promise you this year,” reflected 12th-year head coach Santiago Restrepo on his team's season. “You have to outwork your opponents and work extremely hard to be better. We did finish out season on a high-note in the last month and that's what is important right now.”
Oklahoma was swept for just the third time this season as Texas took the straight-sets win by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-17.
The first set went-back-and forth with neither side getting more than a two-point lead until it was over. The Sooners last led in the set at 17-16 and fought from back-to-back deficits to tie the set at 19-19 and 20-20 with a solo block and a kill from redshirt-junior Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.).
“I thought that we were going to win [the first set] and that kind of took the wind out of our sails,” stated Restrepo.
Ward led the OU attack with 12 kills on a .300 attack rate to go with a team-leading nine digs and two solo blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) hit a match-high .571 on nine kills and just one error.
As a team, the Longhorns hit .367, including a .515 mark in the second. Paulina Prieto Cerame knocked down a match-high 21 kills and hit .439. Amy Neal hit a team-best .444 with 15 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double effort.
Chloe Collins managed the Texas attack with 44 assists, while Cat McCoy led the defense with 18. For Oklahoma, freshman setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) collected 28 assists.
Seniors Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) and Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) each played in their final match with the Sooners. The two were honored post-match along with classmate Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.). Holst recorded six kills and six digs, while Migliazzo came off the bench for three digs in the third set.
