Mayfield Earns Pair of Honors

NORMAN – Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was one of 10 players named Friday as a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding college football player in America who started his career as a walk-on.

Additionally, Mayfield was also named as the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of Week, while sophomore running back Samaje Perine was named honorable mention for week 10. The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.

Mayfield led then-No. 12 Sooners to a 44-34 road win over Baylor on Saturday, snapping the Bears' 20-game home winning streak. Playing in the rain, Mayfield completed 24 of his 34 passes (70.6 percent) for 270 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 76 yards and another score to hand No. 4 Baylor its first loss of the season.

After his impressive performance on Saturday, Mayfield was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career and the second time this season. He also won the honor Sept. 21 after he set a school record with 572 yards of total offense, the most by an FBS player this season,

Saturday's win in Waco marked the eighth time this year that Mayfield has thrown for at least three touchdowns in a game and the fifth time he's thrown for at least three TDs and run for at least one score. Mayfield is tied for the nation's lead by accounting for at least four touchdowns seven times this season, and ranks second in pass efficiency rating (183.9), second in passing yards per attempt (10.0), third in completion percentage (70.2) and fifth in passing touchdowns (31).

Perine was also integral to the Sooners' defeat of Baylor. He rushed for 166 total yards on 28 carries and added a pair of scores, including a season-long 55-yard scamper that put the Sooners up two touchdowns early in the second half.

Perine leads the Sooners in rushing with an average of 97.2 yards per game and has topped the 150-yard mark three times this season. His 13 total touchdowns (12 rushing) are also a team high and third most in the Big 12.

Oklahoma hosts No. 11 TCU on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. It is the final home game of the season for the Sooners, who are looking to reach the 10-win mark for the 13th time in the 17-year Bob Stoops era.
