NORMAN — The No. 8/8 Oklahoma men's basketball team closed its exhibition slate with a 98-76 wire-to-wire victory over Mid-America Christian on Thursday night inside Lloyd Noble Center.
For the second straight preseason game, OU showed off its depth as 11 Sooners scored in the contest. Seniors Buddy Hield and Ryan Spangler combined to score 42 points to lead the Sooners.
Hield, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, finished with 23 on 9 for 17 from the floor, including a 5 for 7 mark from 3-point range. Spangler tallied 19 points on 7 for 9 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and secured a team-high two steals.
Senior Isaiah Cousins and freshman Christian James contributed nine points apiece, while sophomore Jordan Woodard and redshirt freshman Jamuni McNeace both added eight. Cousins also dished out a game-high six assists.
OU dominated the boards, outrebounding the Evangels by a 55-37 mark. McNeace and junior C.J. Cole led OU with seven rebounds. McNeace also recorded four blocks and an assist in 17 minutes of play.
The Sooners shot 45.8 percent from the field (33 for 72), 36.4 percent from behind the 3-point line (8 for 22) and 63.2 percent from the free throw line (24 for 38).
Turning in a solid defensive performance, OU held MACU to 28 for 74 from the field (37.8 percent) and 11 for 34 from 3-point range (32.4 percent) and forced 17 turnovers. OU outrebounded the Evangels by a 55-37 mark and recorded nine total blocks. The Evangels are coached by Josh Gamblin, who was a graduate assistant for the Sooners last season.
"I like our starting point, but that's what it is: a starting point," fifth-year OU head coach Lon Kruger said. "Our guys need to get better, and that doesn't surprise me. Everyone, after two exhibition games, feels like they need to get better. I love the group that we're doing it with and I love their attitude, energy and work ethic, and I wouldn't trade that for anything.”
Oklahoma begins the regular season when it heads to Memphis, Tenn., to face the Memphis Tigers at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The game will air on ESPN.
