AUSTIN, Texas — The Oklahoma soccer team had struggled to find its offensive groove over the last few contests, but the Sooners discovered it once again against rival Texas in a 2-1 win on Friday night inside Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field.
Despite falling behind 1-0 early in the second half, the Sooners (9-6-2 overall, 2-2-2 Big 12) showed resolve as they tallied two consecutive goals against the Longhorns (7-4-4 overall, 4-2-1 Big 12).
OU's victory broke a two-match skid while stopping the Longhorns' five-match unbeaten streak.
“I'm incredibly proud of the response of the group to the past couple of weekends,” fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. “Texas at home is a tough assignment, and you know to score it has to be of the highest quality. We had two wonderful passages of play that showed our ability in the final third to use each other and make quality finishes.”
The Longhorns struck first on a long-range shot from 23 yards out off the foot of junior forward Jasmine Hart. Freshman forward Alexa Adams assisted on the goal.
In the 61st minute, the Sooners answered when sophomore defender/forward Jordyn Knox-Webster recorded her first career goal. Off of passes from sophomore midfielder Lizzie Luallin and junior midfielder Shiloh Price, Knox-Webster sent the ball into the middle of the net from nine yards out.
From there, OU controlled the momentum throughout the rest of the contest.
Off a cross from senior forward Devin Barrett, junior forward Caren Nelson pounded in a header from the far post from seven yards out to put the Sooners on top. The goal was the fifth of the year for Nelson, a team high.
“The character to come back from a goal down, especially in response to a great goal by Texas' Hart, shows the heartbeat of this team is truly alive,” Potter said.
The win was the first for the Sooners over Texas since Nov. 3, 2010 (OU 1, Texas 0; Big 12 Championship). It was also the first time OU has topped the Longhorns in Austin since Oct. 24, 2010 (OU 2, Texas 1 in two overtimes).
At the half, the Longhorns had outshot the Sooners by a mark of 10-3, but OU withstood the offensive pressure and continued to defend well. UT finished with a 19-12 edge in shots, including a five to four advantage in shots on goal. Junior forward Liz Keester led OU with four shots, while Barrett and Price recorded two apiece.
In a full game in goal, OU junior Kassidie Stade recorded four saves as she moved to 7-6-2 on the season. Texas senior goalkeeper Abby Smith, the reigning ESPNW National Player of the Week, had two saves and fell to 7-4-4 this year.
The Sooners return to action when they play at TCU on Sunday. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. CT start.
