LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team was in need of a second-half run in each set, but it never came as No. 7 Kansas claimed a clean, 3-0 win at the Horesji Center on Wednesday night. The Sooners and Jayhawks were tied a 15-15 in the first and 12-12 in both the second and third sets before KU pulled away in each.
Oklahoma (7-12, 1-6) was swept for the second-straight match by scores of 18-25, 22-25 and 18-25. The Jayhawks (19-0, 7-0), who have yet to go five sets this season, remain unbeaten with the win.
Kelsie Payne led the KU attack with 15 kill on a .538 attack rate as the Jayhawks outhit the Sooners, .355-153. Oklahoma has hit under .200 two matches in a row. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) was the leader for the OU attack with 14 kills and a .258 attack rate to go with six digs.
Ainise Havili, who is second in the country, managed the Jawyhawks' offense with 37 assists along with five kills and three digs. On the defensive side of the ball, Cassie Wait picked up a match-high 23 digs. Madison Rigdon joined Payne in double figures with 11 kills.
Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) and sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) finished second for the Sooners with eight kills apiece.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) dished out 28 assists for Oklahoma with eight digs. Gardiner and sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led the OU defense with nine digs each.
The Sooners return to action at West Virginia Saturday, October 24 at 2:30 pm CT.
