NORMAL, Ill. — Behind a game-winning goal from freshman Kaylee Dao, the Oklahoma soccer team closed its non-conference slate with a 1-0 shutout victory over Illinois State at Adelaide Street Field on Friday.
The Sooners (8-4-1 overall, 1-0-1 Big 12) put on the pressure early, holding possession for the majority of the first half. OU finished with 11 shots, four of which were on goal, while limiting Illinois State (4-7-2 overall, 1-1-0 Missouri Valley Conference) to six total shots and just one on goal. The Sooners' defense held the Redbirds without a shot until the 34th minute.
In the 64th minute, the Sooners got on the scoreboard with Dao's fourth score of the season. The goal, which Dao headed in, came off a free kick from freshman Angela Boyle, who tallied her first assist of the season. Of Dao's four total goals, three have been game winners, a team high. Dao also recorded the game winner against Oral Roberts on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sooners are riding a six-game unbeaten streak, going 5-0-1 in that stretch and outscoring opponents by a 10 to two margin. OU concluded its non-conference slate with a 7-4-0 record.
Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said he is proud of his squad, especially since it has played four games in a span of seven days.
“These are the moments that can define a team,” Potter said. “To gain a positive result in all four speaks to the character, endeavor and commitment of the group. We are showing the signs of a team that competes with care for each other, with a willingness to drive each other forward and a group that carries the responsibility of representing those that have come before them.
“I am a very proud coach, as are the rest of the staff,” Potter continued. “It's time to rest up, get home and now look forward to the week ahead and two challenging games in West Virginia and Kansas.”
OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade, the reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, tallied her fifth shutout of the season on Friday and improved to 6-4-1 overall with the win. Stade has held four of the last five OU opponents scoreless.
For Illinois State, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Niestrom fell to 3-5-1 on the year. Stade had one save in the contest, while Niestrom had three.
The Sooners will play a split conference weekend when they host No. 4 West Virginia on Friday, Oct. 9, before traveling to take on Kansas on Sunday, Oct. 11. The match with West Virginia is slated for a 7 p.m. CT start and will be the Kick for a Cure game, and the Sooners will face Kansas at 1 p.m. CT.
