NORMAN, Okla. – After narrowly taking the first two sets, the University of Oklahoma volleyball team had to fight from behind to claim the third and earn a 3-0 win over Lamar in the NIKE Invitational finale at McCasland Field House, Saturday afternoon. The Sooners swept the field and improved to 8-2 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 0-9.

Oklahoma trailed in each set, but prevailed by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 27-25 for its fourth three-set win of the season. Junior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) was named the Most Valuable Player of the invitational, while sophomore outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) and freshman middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) each earned a spot on the All-Invitational Team.

“It is extremely important. During a timeout I said to the team, 'somebody [beat us] at 22-18, no let's do it to somebody else and it's our house. We've got to win in our house,'” said head coach Santiago Restrepo on his team's ability to bounce back in the third.

Junior libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) had a stellar defensive match with a team-high 16 digs.

“[Lamar] is a tough team. They get you on your heels because they run a very fast offense. They have two very good middles and are very talented. It was about us adjusting for us.”

Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) tallied a match-leading 10 kills and added five digs and three blocks. Hazelwood added eight kills, while Holst notched seven.

Junior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) registered 29 assists and chipped in with six blocks.

For Lamar, Courtney Moore led the way with nine kills and hit a match-high .318. Libero Erika Rojas earned a spot on the All-Invitational Team with a 16-dig effort.

The Sooners hit only .165, while the Cardinals owned a .125 attack rate. The two teams combined for 31 service aces in the match.

Oklahoma is on the road next week for three matches in the state of North Carolina, beginning with a match at Wake Forest on Thursday, September 18.
