NORMAN (AP) - Melvin Gordon's FBS single-game rushing record lasted all of seven days.

One week after the Wisconsin star rushed for 408 yards, Oklahoma true freshman Samaje Perineeclipsed Gordon's mark with 427 yards on 34 carries Saturday in a 44-7 win against Kansas.

"It's still surreal," Perine said. "I just looked at it as doing what I had to do to help my team. I'm not really feeling special in any type of way."

He broke Gordon's record on a 42-yard run early in the fourth quarter, before being subbed out to chants of "Perine, Perine" from the Owen Field crowd. Perine had 222 yards on the ground at halftime, then opened the third quarter with a 66-yard touchdown dash. He had five rushing touchdowns going into the fourth quarter.

Last week against Nebraska, Gordon broke the FBS single-game mark previously held since 1999 by TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, who with 406 yards against UTEP had been the only FBS back ever to run for 400-plus yards in a game.

Lightning in the area delayed kickoff in Norman for an hour and a half.

Sophomore Keith Ford actually started at running back for the Sooners. Perine didn't get his first carry until Oklahoma's second possession. On it, he rumbled 49 yards for a touchdown.

When Ford fumbled away the ball on the Sooners' next drive, Perine shouldered the rushing load the rest of the way. Perine also broke Greg Pruitt's 43-year-old Oklahoma single-game rushing record of 294 yards on the Sooners' third possession of the third quarter.

"[Running backs coach Cale Gundy] overheard other people on the sideline saying I needed this amount of yards, and I went over and told him I really don't care," Perine said. "I just want to play the next play, but if you want another guy in there, he can go in there and try to get us some yards."

"The guy is just so exceptional in everything that he does," head coach Bob Stoops said. "We were thinking about resting him, and then someone said he only needs 35 more yards, and you know, that's just too close not to do it, and there's too much time left in the game."

In all, Perine had eight rushes of 20 or more yards Saturday, more than 19 FBS teams had all season entering this week, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Perine entered the weekend leading the Big 12 with 1,001 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. He ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns in Oklahoma's 42-30 win at Texas Tech last weekend.
