NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma men's tennis player Axel Alvarez claimed the 2014 USTA/ITA Central Region Singles Championship on Monday inside the Gregg Wadley Indoor Pavilion.

Alvarez defeated Leonardo Toledo of Minnesota 7-6(2), 6-4 in the finals to take home the title for the second year in a row.

“Axel did a great job,” Sooner head coach John Roddick said. “He showed that he is one of the best players in the country.”

The junior utilized a dominant service game to dispatch Toledo in straight sets. Alvarez was never broken, and took the match's lone break in the first game of the second set and never looked back.

Alvarez knocked off hard-serving Ben Hagan of Iowa, 5-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinal round Monday morning to advance to the finals. Hagan's first serve was troublesome for Alvarez at times, but he rallied after dropping the first set and controlled the last two to take the win.

Alvarez, the tournament's top seeded singles player, won six total matches on his way to the championship. With his two wins on Monday, he moves his singles record to 10-2 this fall.

Oklahoma was also represented in the finals of main draw doubles. Alvarez and Webb, the No. 3 seeded doubles team, won four matches in the doubles draw to advance to the final match against seventh-seeded Tin Ostojic and Tomislav Gregurovic of Wichita State.

The Sooners dropped the first set and then held serve through the second set to force a tiebreak. In the extra frame, both teams traded points on service, forcing the tiebreak all the way to 10 points before Wichita State finally got two clear of the Sooners to take the championship.

Monday capped a stellar weekend for the Sooners. OU won a total of 17 matches during the regional championship. The Sooners claimed the singles title for the second consecutive season, recorded a runner-up finish in doubles.

“All in all, our level of play was high,” Roddick said. “I was proud of the effort everyone gave and I am looking forward to the rest of our fall schedule.”

Next up on the fall schedule is the USA F28 Futures tournament in Mansfield, Texas where sophomore Andrew Harris will look to defend his 2013 singles title. The ITF Pro Circuit event features a 32-man main draw to be contested over five days at the Walnut Creek Country Club. Harris's first round matchup has yet to be determined.
