FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
• Thursday's game will mark the second all-time meeting between Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Last season, the Sooners posted a 72-42 win over the Islanders in a New Year's Eve contest at McCasland Field House on the OU campus. It was the first regular season game in the venue since 1975. OU, which had seven players score at least seven points, was led by Steven Pledger's 17 and Amath M'Baye's 14. A&M-Corpus Christi shot just .293 from the field.
• OU has dominated home non-conference games over the last decade, winning 98 of its last 101 non-league contests in Norman going back to Jan. 3, 2000 (good for a .970 winning percentage). Included was a streak of 49 non-conference home victories that was snapped by Villanova (67-51) on Dec. 6, 2006. The only other two home non-conference losses during the last 101 games came to Stephen F. Austin (66-62 in 2007-08 and 56-55 last season).
• Senior forward Cameron Clark and sophomore guard Buddy Hield have each scored in double figures in all seven games and lead the team with their 18.9 and 16.9 respective scoring averages. Clark ranks third in the Big 12 in scoring (leads with his 28.4 points per 40 minutes) while Hield ranks fifth. Clark has paced OU in the points department in four of the last five games, and over the last four contests is averaging 23.3 points (on .565 field goal shooting) and 6.8 rebounds. Included was a career-high 32-point night against top-ranked Michigan State in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic championship game. Hield, who scored in double figures seven times all of last season, paces the squad with his 14 3-pointers (shooting .389) and also averages 4.0 rebounds. He has scored at least 13 points in every outing.
• The Sooners have used the same starting lineup in all seven games and each starter is averaging double figures in scoring. The starters have accounted for 78 percent of the team's points on the year. All five scored in double figures in each of the last two games, netting 161 of the squad's 197 points (82 percent).
• OU opened eyes in August when it averaged 90.6 points a contest during its five-game exhibition tour of Belgium and France (it averaged 70.6 last season). Since returning to the U.S., the Sooners have continued to put up points. Lon Kruger's team averaged 96.0 points in its two preseason exhibition outings and is averaging 88.7 points through seven regular season games to rank 11th nationally (it has scored at least 40 points in 13 of its 14 halves). The last time OU averaged more than 80.0 points per game for an entire season was in 1994-95 (81.7 ppg in Kelvin Sampson's first year as head coach).
PREVIEWING TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI
• Southland Conference member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won three of its first five games this season but has dropped its last four and enters Thursday's contest with a 3-6 record. The Islanders, who finished 6-23 last season, have picked up home wins this year against Huston-Tillotson (79-45), IPFW (72-71) and Texas-Pan American (72-61). Three of their losses have come by four or fewer points, all at home (lost by two to Tennessee Tech, by two to Rice and by four to Central Michigan).
• Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is led by junior point guard John Jordan, who averages team highs of 15.4 points, 4.3 assists and 1.9 steals while also ranking second with his 5.1 rebounds a contest. He has attempted 64 free throws, almost twice as many as the Islander with the second-most attempts, and is shooting .452 from the field. Freshman forward Jeff Beverly averages 11.0 points and 3.6 boards per game and boasts shooting percentages of .508 from the field, .462 from 3-point range (6-for-13) and .794 from the foul line. He is coming off a 20-point effort (in 28 minutes) in an 11-point loss to Houston. Junior guard Hameed Ali contributes 9.8 points and 2.1 assists an outing and tied for the team lead with 10 treys (shooting .370 from deep).
• Former longtime Rice mentor Willis Wilson is in his third year as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's head coach and is 15-53 there. Wilson served as Rice's head coach for 16 years (1992-93 through 2007-08 seasons) and compiled a 219-246 record. In between, he served the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons as an assistant coach at Memphis.
SOONER TIP-INS
• OU has scored at least 40 points in 13 of 14 halves this season. Last year, the Sooners didn't register their 13th 40-point half until the 27th game of the season (they scored 40 in a half 17 times on the year).
• The Sooners rank second in the Big 12 in assists (16.3 apg), steals (8.3 spg) and free throw percentage (.716). OU boasts four of the Big 12's top 11 free throw shooters by percentage (Cameron Clark third at .862, Isaiah Cousins fifth at .815, Buddy Hield eighth at .800 and Jordan Woodard 11th at .787).
• With his .694 field goal percentage, sophomore forward Ryan Spangler would lead the Big 12 in the category if he had enough makes to qualify (players need to average 5.0 makes per game; he averages 4.9). Spangler, who has shot at least 60 percent from the floor in all seven games, ranks second in the league in rebounding (8.9) and sixth in blocked shots (1.6).
• Freshman point guard Jordan Woodard has scored in double figures in three of the last four games and is averaging 10.3 points on the year. He leads the team with his 4.9 assists per game (ranks sixth in the Big 12) and with his 37 free throw makes and 47 attempts.
• After averaging 2.7 points on .279 field goal and .250 3-point shooting as a freshman last season, guard Isaiah Cousins is averaging 11.8 points this year and owns respective .481 and .500 shooting marks. Cousins had never scored more than 10 points in a game prior to two weeks ago but has netted at least 10 in each of the last four contests.
