FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
• Oklahoma owns a 5-0 all-time record against UALR, with all five meetings taking place in the Sooner State (last four in Norman). The average score of the five matchups has been 101-72. OU won the last meeting, 80-56 (Dec. 11, 1999).
• OU has dominated home non-conference games over the last decade, winning 96 of its last 99 non-league contests in Norman going back to Jan. 3, 2000 (good for a .970 winning percentage). Included was a streak of 49 non-conference home victories that was snapped by Villanova (67-51) on Dec. 6, 2006. The only other two home non-conference losses during the last 99 games came to Stephen F. Austin (66-62 in 2007-08 and 56-55 last season).
• Senior forward Cameron Clark and sophomore guard Buddy Hield have each scored in double figures in all five games and lead the team with their 18.2 and 16.2 respective scoring averages. Clark ranks third in the Big 12 in scoring while Hield ranks ninth. Clark has paced OU in the points department in each of the last three games, and over the last two contests is averaging 26.0 points on .645 field goal shooting. His 20 points versus Seton Hall last Friday were his most since his freshman season, and he followed with a career-high 32 the next night versus top-ranked Michigan State. Hield, who led OU in scoring the first two games with career highs of 19 and 23 points, paces the squad with his nine 3-pointers.
• After averaging 2.7 points on .279 field goal and .250 3-point shooting as a freshman last season, guard Isaiah Cousins ranks third on the team this year with his 11.4 scoring average and owns respective .529 and .444 shooting marks. Playing approximately 25 miles from his home of Mount Vernon, N.Y., last weekend, Cousins scored a career-high 19 points (previous high was 10) against Seton Hall on Friday with the help of 7-for-8 field goal shooting, and followed with 15 against Michigan State. He also averages 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists while boasting a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio (ranks sixth in Big 12).
• OU opened eyes in August when it averaged 90.6 points a contest during its five-game exhibition tour of Belgium and France (it averaged 70.6 last season). Since returning to the U.S., the Sooners have continued to put up points. Lon Kruger's team averaged 96.0 points in its two preseason exhibition outings and is averaging 84.8 points through five regular season games (it has scored at least 40 points in nine of its 10 halves). The last time OU averaged more than 80.0 points per game for an entire season was in 1994-95 (81.7 ppg in Kelvin Sampson's first year as head coach).
PREVIEWING UALR
• Sun Belt Conference member UALR enters Friday's game with a 2-3 record. After starting the season with three losses, the Trojans have rebounded to post an 85-82 road overtime win against Southern and a 90-58 home triumph over Southern Arkansas. They finished with a 17-15 record last season and went 11-9 in conference play to tie for fourth out of 11 teams.
• Preseason Second-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection Will Neighbour is averaging team highs of 18.8 points and 7.6 rebounds while also leading the team in field goal percentage (.585) and steals (1.8 spg). The 6-10, 225-pound senior forward from England has scored at least 21 points in three of five games, including a season-high 23-point outing at Southern. Neighbour has also attempted 20 more free throws (36) than the next highest total on the team (shooting .778) from the line. Sophomore guard Josh Hagins ranks second on the squad by averaging 12.2 points and leads the Trojans with his 3.6 assists an outing. On Tuesday against Southern Arkansas, the 6-1, 175-pounder was 7-for-8 from the field and finished with 18 points (one shy of career high), five rebounds, a career-high-tying eight assists and a career-high four blocked shots. He was 4-for-4 from 3-point range to up his season percentage to .409 (was 5-for-18 [.278] entering the game).
• UALR is under the direction of Steve Shields, who owns a 166-146 (.532) career record and is in his 11th year as a collegiate head coach, all with the Trojans. He was the 2004 Sun Belt Coach of the Year, guided two teams to at least 20 wins (20 in 2007-08 and 23 in 2008-09) and won the 2011 Sun Belt Tournament to earn an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
SOONER TIP-INS
• OU is one of two Big 12 teams (Iowa State is the other) that boasts seven players averaging at least 7.0 points per game.
• Sophomore forward Ryan Spangler would rank second in the Big 12 in field goal percentage (he's shooting .688) if he had enough makes to qualify in the category (players need to average 5.0 makes per game; he averages 4.4). Spangler ranks seventh in the league in rebounding (7.8) and seventh in blocked shots (1.6).
• OU has scored at least 40 points in nine of 10 halves this season. Last year, the Sooners didn't register their ninth 40-point half until the 17th game of the season.
• The Sooners rank second in the Big 12 with their 8.0 steals per game and rank third in turnover margin (+2.2 per contest).
• After averaging 16.0 points on .588 field goal and .714 (5-for-7) 3-point shooting in OU's two preseason exhibition games, freshman point guard Jordan Woodard is averaging 8.6 points through five regular season games and is shooting .270 from the field and .182 (2-for-11) from 3-point range. However, he leads the team with his 4.8 assists per outing and his 21 free throw makes and 28 attempts.
