ATHENS, Ga. -- Costin Paval advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Singles Championships after downing Georgia's Hernus Pieters at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., on Wednesday.

Paval, the nation's 12th-ranked singles player, boasts a 16-3 record after taking down Pieters, ranked No. 60, in straight sets Wednesday. The Bucharest, Romania, native took the first set 6-3 and earned a 6-4 victory in the second to advance.

Paval, a junior from Romania, will face a familiar opponent in Texas Tech's No. 40-ranked Gonzalo Escobar in the second round Thursday. Escobar advanced after he upset Stanford's Ryan Thacher, ranked No. 29, in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6.

Doubles action begins tomorrow as Paval and freshman Dane Webb, ranked No. 10, will take on Penn State's Russell Bader and Jason Lee, ranked No. 27.
