NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 7 Oklahoma entered Sunday in the same position it had last week at Baylor, having already won a Big 12 series and looking for a sweep. The Sooners reversed their fortunes, however, on Sunday as they were able to accomplish the sweep of Kansas with a 6-2 win in the first year of the Big 12's new three-game series format instituted this season.
OU moved to 30-4 and 6-1 in the Big 12 with the win while Kansas fell to 23-10 and 2-7 in the Big 12 after Oklahoma's back-to-back 8-0 run rule victories coupled with Sunday's win. The Sooners fell behind 2-0 early on Sunday in the second inning before bouncing back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the second.
“This is a team that wants to win. They want to win a Big 12 championship and a national championship. Our expectation is greatness every time we step on to the field and we hold ourselves to a high standard,” said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. “A team is good when it's not at its best and still finds a way to win against a good team like Kansas. Today was huge for us to know how to respond to being down as it will happen again and we need to know how to come back.”
Kansas collected nine hits, tying Stanford for an OU opponent high this season, while the Sooners picked up eight hits. OU outscored KU 22-2 on the three-game weekend. The Jayhawks' two runs were the most scored since Iowa scored two in OU's 4-2 win on March 4 and the first earned runs scored by a Big 12 opponent this year.
Keilani Ricketts picked up the win for the Sooners, her 17th of the year as she moved to 17-4. Ricketts struck out six while walking none and ended the day with a season ERA of 0.74. Kristin Martinez took the loss for KU to fall to 5-2 on the year as she gave up four hits and five earned runs in 1.2 innings of action.
OU fell behind early as it gave up its first earned runs of the Big 12 season in the top of the second behind a two-out double from Chanin Naudin. After Liz Kocon singled to start the inning, Lexi Bryant doubled off the top of the left center to fence to put Jayhawks on second and third with no outs. After back-to-back outs, Naudin sent a double to left center to score Kocon and Bryant for a 2-0 Kansas lead.
The Sooners quickly answered the Jayhawks' runs with six of their own in the bottom of the inning on five hits and one error. Back-to-back singles from Jessica Shults and Georgia Casey along with a walk from Erica Sampson loaded the bases for the Sooners with no outs. After an out from a Brianna Turang line drive to Martinez, Katie Norris sent a sharply hit single through the left side of the Jayhawk defense to score Callie Parsons, who had come on to run for Shults.
After Jessica Vest replaced Norris on the base path at first, Javen Henson sent a double to right center to clear the bases and give Oklahoma a 4-2 lead. A Destinee Martinez fly out to center gave KU two outs as Morgan Druhan entered the circle for the Jayhawks and promptly gave up the 17th home run of the season for Oklahoma freshman Lauren Chamberlain, which moved her into a tie for sixth on the OU charts for home runs in a season.
Oklahoma returns to this action this Thursday as it opens a three-game home stand against Texas Tech at 7 p.m. The Sooners and the Red Raiders square off again on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m.
