NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 7 Oklahoma captured its second Big 12 series in as many weeks Saturday as it run ruled Kansas, 8-0 in six innings, with the help of four home runs, two from freshman Lauren Chamberlain, and a two hitter from Michelle Gascoigne in the circle. With the win, the Sooners moved to 29-4 and 5-1 in the Big 12 while Kansas fell to 23-9 and 2-6 in the Big 12.
The Sooners put together 10 hits and moved to 26-1 this season in games they collect at least seven hits and 8-0 in games with at least 10 hits. Four of the 10 hits were home runs as Oklahoma now has eight games this season with at least three home runs including Friday night's 8-0 win with three. Chamberlain hit two home runs in the same game for the fourth time this season and for the second straight game this weekend.
“These are exception athletes and everyone is on the same page with the same mission,” said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. “They are battling in their at bats and almost anyone down our lineup can hit it hard and change the game. We did a good job at fighting the count in our at bats and to do that against a team like Kansas shows that we are sharper than we were a week ago at Baylor.”
Oklahoma has yet to give up an earned run in its six Big 12 games as Gascoigne moved to 12-0 on the year as she struck out nine Jayhawks while giving up just two hits and no walks. The scoreless game lowered the junior's ERA to 0.74 on the season. Morgan Druhan (7-3) took the loss for the Jayhawks as she gave up two runs and three hits in the opening two innings of the game.
After hitting two home runs Friday night, Chamberlain returned to her home run hitting ways in the bottom of the third as she sent her Big 12 leading 15th home run of the season over the center field fence to score herself and Destinee Martinez who reached on a bunt to third.
Following Chamberlain's lead, Javen Henson hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. Henson's shot over the left field fence gave OU its 14th game with multiple home runs.
Oklahoma added a fourth run to its total in the bottom of the fifth as Jessica Shults and Georgia Casey got back-to-back walks to start the inning off. After Callie Parsons pinch ran for Shults, Erica Sampson sent a single straight up the middle to score Parsons from second.
Chamberlain added her second home run of the game and her fourth of the weekend with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth that fell just in front of the high-definition video board beyond the left field fence at the OU Softball Complex. After the freshman's 16th home run this season, Keilani Ricketts followed with a walk and was replaced on the base path by Ali Vandever who promptly stole second before scoring on a Shults single up the middle.
After Druhan re-entered the circle for the Jayhawks, Casey greeted her with Oklahoma's fourth home run of the afternoon to left field to score both the Australian and Shults and end the game with a 8-0 Oklahoma victory. The two-run shot was Casey's sixth of the season in just 18 games.
Oklahoma and Kansas return Sunday for the series finale at 12 p.m. Fans are reminded that The City of Norman and OU are hosting the annual Medieval Fair this weekend beginning Friday at Reaves Park across the street from the OU Softball Complex. Estimated attendance of this event over the next three days is expected to go over 100,000. Please keep this in mind when attempting to get to the OU Softball Complex this weekend and allow plenty of time for potential traffic delays.
Only those attending Oklahoma Softball games will be allowed to park in the parking areas commonly used for home softball events.
