NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma soccer team opened the new era under first-year head coach Matt Potter on Friday with a 3-0 win over Oral Roberts at the OU Soccer Complex.
Abby Hodgen scored two of the Sooners' goals, both in the first half, to give OU a two-goal lead at intermission. Her first goal was unassisted and came from 25 yards out as she bent a free kick over the ORU wall of defense and into the bottom corner of the net. Later in the half, she was assisted by Samantha Howell, who was set up initially by Zoe Dickson.
The third and final goal of the game came from Amy Petrikin, who was assisted by Caitlin Mooney. The assist set up Petrikin all alone with the ORU goalkeeper and she easily went around her for the score.
"We are delighted to have a winning start," said Potter. "Our team has embraced all that we have asked them to and to win this evening speaks to their efforts and willingness to learn. They have adapted to the style and philosophy that we are trying to implement. The fact that we scored multiple goals is encouraging and, more importantly, we limited our opponents' chances. The clean sheet is always nice."
Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire played the entire game, which consisted of two 35-minute halves, and recorded the shutout for the Sooner defense.
"It was time that we played someone other than ourselves and you could see the enthusiasm in how we started and dictated play," added Potter. "Obviously, we are a work in progress and we won't get carried away with ourselves as it is a first game. With everyone getting significant time, we found out a little more about each other (players and coaches) which means we took another step forward as we build our relationship and understanding of each other. I also want to thank all of those that came out to watch."
The Sooners will also host Arkansas this spring on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. The game is free and open to the public.
The two home contests are joined by a pair of road games at Tulsa on April 14 and at SMU on April 28.
