EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 16 University of Oklahoma baseball team posted a 3-2 victory late Saturday at No. 9 Oregon in the Nike College Showcase. The Sooners received another strong outing from their starting pitcher as Jonathan Gray lasted seven innings and struck out 10 batters with zero walks.

"Jonathan Gray really grew a lot today," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "He really stepped up today and that gives him. The whole team really handled adversity tonight. We took a big step forward with a win over a ranked opponent. Oregon is a really good team, deserving of its top 10 ranking."

OU defeated West Virginia earlier in the day, 5-2, behind a complete game performance by Dillon Overton, who also did not walk a batter in the game.

The Sooners jumped on top 1-0 in the third inning as Tanner Toal's groundout to second base scored Chase Simpson, who tripled to lead off the frame.

Oregon tied it up at one run apiece in the sixth inning, but Toal struck again in the seventh inning with a two-out single to score Cody Reine from second base.

In the eighth inning, Max White delivered his third hit of the game, and sixth of the day, to give the Sooners an insurance run which proved to be big as Oregon came back in the bottom of the frame with another run.

"The two-out RBIs were really big," said Golloway. "The difference in the game was the timely hitting. Tanner came up big and what a day by Max White. He is playing like an All-American at first base right now and is really swinging the bat."

The insurance run helped Jordan John close out the final two innings to record his third save of the season. John struck out four batters in his team leading ninth appearance of the season. He has struck out 21 batters with four walks in 22 1/3 innings pitched in 2012.

The two wins today boosts the Sooners' overall record to 11-4 while the Ducks dropped to 11-3.

The Sooners conclude action in the Nike College Showcase tomorrow at 11 a.m. at No. 22 Oregon State (10-5). The game can be heard live on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM.
