NORMAN, Okla. -- After a night of offensive fireworks that included 27 combined in wins over Indiana and Wichita State, No. 8 Oklahoma returned to Marita Hynes Field in an attempt to face the same two teams in the Courtyard by Marriott Norman Oklahoma Spring Festival before inclement weather hit. The Sooners (18-3) got their fourth straight shutout and ninth straight win with a 5-0 victory over Wichita State before the day's second game was postponed with rain moving into the area.
Oklahoma's game against Indiana has been moved to Sunday at 5 p.m. with the originally scheduled game against the Hoosiers at 3:30 p.m. moved to a 3 p.m. start.
With their second win over the Shockers in as many days, having defeated WSU 13-0 on Friday, the Sooners have out scored their last four opponents 40-0 and have collected at least seven hits in six straight games. The nine-game winning streak is the longest of the season and longest since the 2011 Oklahoma squad won 11 straight.
Michelle Gascoigne remained undefeated on the year in the circle with her eighth win of the season as she held the Shockers to just two hits on the day. Gascoigne struck out 10 of the 24 batters she faced for her second double-digit strikeout game of the season. Gascoigne and the Oklahoma pitching staff has held its opponents to three or less hits in nine of their last 10 games.
It took the Sooners four innings to get their first run of the day against the Shockers as Lauren Chamberlain connected on a two-out double to right center that sent Erica Sampson home for the first run of the game. Sampson had entered the game as a pinch runner for Brittany Williams who advanced to first with a walk.
One inning later, the Sooners added two more runs as Brianna Turang singled to lead off before Allee Allen sent the junior to second with a sacrifice bunt. Javen Henson sent a triple off the right field wall that scored Turang before Henson advanced home on an errant throw from Wichita State rightfielder Brianne Bond.
OU continued its scoring effort in the sixth thanks in part to an error by WSU shortstop Hayley Temple that allowed Erica Sampson to reach first. After a pop up from Chamberlain for the inning's second out, freshman Georgia Casey made the Shockers pay for the earlier error with a two-run home run, her second in as many games and her third in five games.
With Saturday's match up against Indiana postponed until Sunday, the Sooners will be play a doubleheader against the Hoosiers beginning at 3 p.m. with the second game slated to start at 5 p.m.
