The win improved the Sooners' record to 3-2 while the Hawks dropped to 0-2 on the season.
The Sooners trailed 4-3 before Caleb Bushyhead's two-run triple in the fifth gave OU its first lead of the game. OU tacked on five more runs, highlighted by Hunter Lockwood's third home run of the season and the series, an inside the park shot to the gap in left center in the sixth inning.
"Our guys stayed after it and felt like it was just going to be a matter of time and sure enough we were able to scratch some runs across," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "I thought we showed some character coming from behind today."
John made his fourth appearance of the season and improved to 2-1 after giving up one unearned run in six solid relief innings. The sophomore left hander struck out four Hawks and gave up four hits and a walk.
"I was able to give the innings we needed for the win," said John. "The defense did a great job behind me, rolling a couple of double plays, and I was locating my pitches."
John didn't finish the game after relieving Jonathan Gray and his shortened start of two innings. Gray gave up four runs off five hits and a walk and Chris Burgess pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Sooners.
"You can't say enough about Jordan," said Golloway. "I hope he keeps it going and I think he will because he works hard. We didn't let him finish the game today because we wanted to have him available on Tuesday."
The Sooner offense banged out double-digit hits for the second straight game with 14 on the afternoon. Bushyhead led the way with three hits while Lockwood, Matt Oberste and Garrett Carey also had multi-hit games with two base knocks apiece.
Hartford starter Alex Gouin (0-1) lasted 4 1/3 innings but was credited with the loss after giving up five runs off eight hits.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM.
OU's Steven Okert (0-0) is scheduled to start opposite Hartford's Sean Newcomb (0-0) in Sunday's finale.
